Mantis won't get out of rocks in fresh water?

I have removed all the live rocks from my tank and have them soaking in fresh water like my LFS told me to do in order to remove mantis shrimp but there is no signs that he has swam out.

How long will do I have to soak the rocks in order to kill him?

I could help, but this doesn't give me any incentive to do so. at all. way to show the world what a decent a aquarist does.

What he actually means in a nice way is; "Why aren't you trying to remove the Mantis and at least donating it instead of just pointlessly killing it?... especially when most people here have them as pets.....?"

Different species differ in their tolerance of freshwater. Most subtidal species flee fairly quickly, but intertidal species can stick it out for way longer than you LR will survive. In fact, they will often die in the cavity rather than flee. I'm afraid your store didn't you very good advice.

awww dude! and you live in Costa Mesa... man I would've gotten out and taken that Mantis!... argh. Did you save your live rock and still think you have a Mantis?

bravo.. way to show people needing advice how they won't get it because your so much better.. do you feel superior now?

Roy's right, the LFS gave you bad advice. FW will kill the rock.
the easiest thing to do (I've found) is to figure out what hole they're in and pour a little soda water down the hole. they'll come running out.

I know this is the mantis forum where they're loved, but most people still consider them predators in a reef and don't want them. ;)

it's not about superiority. It's about disregard for the lives organisms that make their way into our tanks through no fault of their own. So people don't want them, fine, I understand that; hell, i would hate to have hydroids and flatworms in my tank as much as the next guy. But if the option of live extraction is viable (and if some oddball people would actually pay money for them), why should they deserve to die? the fact that the OP posted in this forum in particular is interesting to me. It's like posting on a PETA forum asking where's a good place for steak in town.

to many people here forget what it's like to be a newbie. yes, it may seem obvious to me, you, and a whole bunch of others, but to the person posting, they're just doing what their LFS told them to do and probably saw nothing wrong with eliminating the seas version of a predatory rat.
was the LFS's advice correct? big no. so they should get the heat, not the poster.

when first starting, how many people here, upon seeing cute little anemones multiply, said 'yea, I must be doing something right' ?? ;)

<----Who wants to buy some aiptasia?!! I've got a big ol rock full of em. I'll sell em cheap 10 cents for one!!

I don't think there's much use in arguing your point Rick, mostly because I can see where you are coming from but I still consciously disagree. Just common sense if you ask me. Also, if the OP had done his research properly, he probably would have found out that hitchhiker mantids are all small and mostly harmless with the exception of a missing snail or hermit once in a while.

Yeah, everyone has a point. I'm always less worried about arguing my position, and just making sure people understand me.
But for the record I stand on justinl's side because in this instance I could have very easily helped to remove and given that Mantis a home.

Arguing on a forum seems to be like an equation for growing cybernetic aptasia. Now since we're on the Mantis forum, I won't feel bad asking how everyones killed THEIR aptasia in the mantis tank =)

A new tank and new rock and sand would solve the problem... HOPEFULLY.

Maybe I'll time Motoko's molt with a peppermint shrimp introduction.

to the origianal poster, I'd suggest you post this in another forum for a legitimate answer.

sounds like this forum wants to put a mantis in every reef tank...
:p

Agreed dear sir! Unfortunately, "common sense" is rather uncommon. Which is, in my opinion, the reason why this garbage irritates us folks so much.

If it ain't a cute fuzzy panda bear or dolphin to the general population... THEY WANT TO DESTROY IT! :)

LFS' are NOTORIOUS for telling people bogus things so they can profit off those who refuse to do a little research. "Oh, your live rock is dead? Here, let us sell you some more at $6.99 a pound!"

'Tough love' tends to hit harder sometimes that sugar coating everything for people. This isn't Woodstock, it's a public forum on the internet.

blah ,blah, blah...

bottom line is the OP was just following directions given to him. to blast him for it could drive him away from the very forums where he could learn the 'truth'.

'tough love' is baloney. courtesy would've gone a lot further to getting the point across, that whole honey and vinegar thing...

and LFS's are only 'notorious' to the online 'informed'. to the newbie, they're the place to go to get info.

but anyway, you guys go back to whatever it is you do in here and I'll go back to telling people to get rid of all the mantis and gorillas they can remove from their reef on other forums.

have a nice day.
