Mantle is melting on new teardrop maxima

Hi everyone, I just got a new maxima a week ago and it seemed ok when I got her home. I have been acclimating it on the sand but I noticed that part of the mantle has been melting away. It doesnt look like it's spreading fast and the clam reacts and is not gapping but does not open wide as the other clams. Has anyone seen this before? Could this be stress related or the beginning of PM? Thanks.

This is the best one I could get. For some reason the camera had a hard time focusing. Anyway, it is on the top right side of the clam.

I also noticed there is a thin clear film in the white of the shell. Not sure if this is the mantel disintegrating or if it is coming from the shell itself.

Check that your waters parameters are in check.
The white film you describe is a symptom of the calms inability to lay down new shell layer properly.
as a clam grows it builds its new shell on top of the old shell .
To increase or lay down new shell material, a clam must accumulate inside its tissue or more precisely up in the underside of its mantel lip tissues ......all the required ingredients needed to make shell material. (stuff like like Calcium and Calcite)it stores this shell building stuff to the point at which its tissue is so saturated with calcium that the Calcium precipitates out of the tissue and onto the existing shell.
This new layer is like a ring on a tree trunk.
Each new growth ring is a historic record of the growth conditions during that time.
If the clam/tree is stressed or some of the ingredients are not available or missing , the new growth layer will be soft and thin and in the case of the clam not adhere to the old shell.
This syndrome is called " premature mantel precipitation " or PMP for short.
It can be brought on by a number of water quality short comings and or stress which might make the clam excrete its mortar too quickly so to speak.

Kalkbreath, thanks for your input. I did have a problem with Calcium and I have been slowly raising it from 260 to 420. I believe that the stress and the lack of calcium is what causing this problem. Would this still cause the mantel to retract like that?

Imagine your the clam.....and your having to pee really bad and then having to hold it until the guy taking care of your aquarium (you) raises the Calcium enough that you can let it out.
When something interrupts a clam while its got excessive amounts of calcite in its tissue ready to precipitate, extending this situation can cause the Calcite/Calcium inside the clam to build to toxic levels.
I believe there is a correlation between mantel retraction and a clam trying to relieve itself of its shell building laden tissues.
Just think of how saturated the clams tissue must become with minerals right before the event?
What if one or two sections of the clams lips dont release the correct mixture of shell extract due to irritation ?
Or when it does it doesn't lay down correctly and then irritates the clam.

I have heard of several clam owners experiencing these symptoms.

Get your water back in check and lets see what happens.
