Map of Local Reefer Shops

I am compling a map of Illinios' local Marine Fish & Supply shops. These are shops that carry MARINE livestock and supplies. I am accepting shop names and locations to add to this map.

I am making this map because I have recently moved, and have been running all over the place, trying to find shops that I heard of. This map will hopefully show how close some shops are, opening up a better reef keeping experience.

PLEASE if you have information about shops to add, please PM me and let me know.

yes, there are maps out there, but most i have seen are flooded with random supply places, and even members houses. I just want a resource of MARINE livestock & supply shops. if they dont have both, i dont want it on the list. once i get a couple more shops for the area I will post a link to the map. thanks

Great idea.....thanks, I've been running around as well.....a good map w/links is just what we need for Marine stuff.

Thanks for the map link. When i look at that map, I see a widespread covereage of shops. But when I look closer, i see chain stores like Petco, and Pet Supplies Plus, which do not take proper care of thier marine livestock. Also, there are member placemarks, which are a waste of time if you tried stoppin by without notice. I know in my area alone, only 3 shops are shown, and I have over 20 on my map. I am still going to provide this map, because I think it will be a useful tool. Please send me your suggestions, and I will add them to the map.

toohotglass, Thanks anyways, but our members seem to be happy with the map we've already got! :)

We know how to look beyond the ones that don't belong! ;)

Good luck with your effort!

These place ACTUALLY do take care of thier livestock...hence they are on the map....Cheers.

I beg to differ.. Pet Supplies Plus, and Petco do not properly aclimate, or quarintine thier marine fish. Many time they do not even have the proper tools to do so. They treat them the same as thier FW fish minus the salt. These are not stores I would recommend anyone to go to for marine livestock. I know many people that would agree.

Here's the link so far. It covers mostly the midwest for now. I am still needing some more locations for the chicago area. If you want to reccomend any, let me know. Thanks

Don't want to get into any kind of debate, but I've been in several LFS that take their livestock bags - float them to tank temp and then add them to tank ready for sale.

What is "proper acclimation and quarantine of marine fish" and have you verified that all stores on your map do indeed follow this??

Proper acclimations inlcudes. Floating to adjust water temps. Slowly, over the course of a couple hours, add in water from the new tank. This helps with varying differences in water parameters, and prevents shock/death. Then placing the animal in the new invironment, with very little water transfer. They shouldn't contaminate thier tanks with thier suppliers water. Just as you should contaminate your tanks with your LFS's water. This is a very popular, and safe proceedure. Many places like Petco, and Pet Supplies Plus, do float thier new stock to adjust for temp. Although, I have seen first hand, and heard stories from others, that these places just dump the whole bag into their stock tanks. Not good for the customers. The proceedure for a quarantine is a little more complicated, but the good shops in the area, should have these quarantine tanks set up for thier new arrivals.

No I am not 100% sure all the shops on my map are following these standards, but that why I am adding by refferal. The bad ones don't get added. Some that make it through, will be exposed by viewers, and will be removed. That is exactly why I am here, trying to find the good store directly from the consumers.

Maybe I am in the wrong place though, cuz you need to do your homework on how to acclimate your fish.

I stand corrected - these LFS do match salinity etc ... not just dumping them into the tank, but as for quarrantine, that's another story . . . I have seen some LFS that do quarrantine, but not all of them.

As far as the first map that fiberlux posted...

I noticed "Tropi-Quatics Pet Ctr" in Lombard was not on the map.. I tried to add it and it gave me some error message about the address... So I think there is always room for improvements

Btw:

Tropi-Quatics Pet Ctr
Address: 337 S Main St, Lombard, IL 60148
Phone: (630) 953-2696

Your bashing these places, but yet you have Aquarium adventure on your map. Everyone (which has been 3) I've ben in has sickly livestock AND they are way over priced. Oh, and the sales people harrass you from the moment you set your foot in the door, but yet they know nothing.

Anyways here are a couple real place's to put on your map:

Rods Reef
15100 Rte 23
DeKalb IL. 60115

Ocean's Floor
1510 Industrial Drive
Lake In The Hills, IL 60156

Any yes, I too have bought a fish from Pet Supplies Plus, but I quantined it when i got it home. It is doing fine too. It's not so much that your fish will die. You are just risking all your other fish to infection/disease if the newly bought fish is not quarantine to be sure they are clean.

Thanks for the info. I added these shops, and removed the Aquarium Adventures

that's a nice thing you're doing toohotglass. This way we will know where we all go to get our marine/reef stuff from IMO...
