Marine Velvet/Coppersafe quandry! Need help!

I take care of a 1500 gal FOWLR tank. Outbreak of Amyloodinium (Marine Velvet) wiped out all fish! Was advised to use Coppersafe, brought in more fish, they too died. Now I'm advised that once copper solution is in the tank, I must continue to use it forever--if level gets too low, mutated parasite will reappear. Parasites remain in rocks, sand, etc. Is this true? I'll be buying Coppersafe for years, if so. Help!

Let the tank run fallow for 6 weeks before adding any more fish. Do lots of water changes in the six week fallow period.

What Steve said - no new fish for at least 6 weeks!

In my opinion, copper in a reef tank, even if FOWLR, is always a bad idea.
Because of all the calcium containing rock you will have a very hard time to keep the copper at the required therapeutic level. If it slips below for too long the treatment fails.
BTW, how often did you test the copper level?

With a tank of that size a rigorous quarantine protocol is mandatory and prophylactic treatment against velvet is highly advised since disease outbreaks are almost impossible to get under control once they get into the tank.

Exactly. I am not a believer in copper in general although there may be circumstances when it is the only available choice. In this case, it is avoidable.
