The discussion in the above link went several different ways. I found out what I needed to know which was about when these (maroon) Clownfish changed sex for good. Other valuable information was when other hobbyists shared their success stories, and offered encouragement, and suggestions.
The topic got a little of track when we started talking about keeping Maroon Clownfish with Triggers. It is said that even though Maroon Clownfish are tough on each other, and on other Clownfish that they are reasonable peaceful towards other inhabitants.
I agree with this. As it was also said these are territorial like many other fish with the disposition to defend it's own turf. I like them because they grow large, and I love the colors. My Triggers exhibit behavior that was attributed to Maroon Clowns in the last thread. Mainly, my Triggers pick up large Hermit Crabs, and move them away from the area the the Trigger secures.
While Maroon Clown are aggressive in defending their turf, and against all Clownfish species including it own, it should be said that a Trigger is more than capable of killing any Maroon Clown.
Clownfish do not have the equipment that the Triggers have. But it should also be said that a Maroon Clownfish will resist interloping Triggers even at it's own great peril.

Maroons

Maroons

Yes I still have the two Maroons. They have been in the 180 for a two weeks now. The big one no longer beats the Hell out of the little one. They come together in the middle of the tank, and kiss cheeks, but the little one does not reside with the big one in the plants that I have in the tank.

You said if one starts twitching like crazy that is a good thing. Why is it a good thing if one starts twitching like crazy?

the one twitching is most likely the smaller one right?
It/(soon to be he) is showing submission
Its letting the female/bigger dominant fish that shes the boss

Mine started off with just the twitching. Now it'll twitch a little, then kiss the females cheek spines. happens alot at night

Thanks. One is twitching, and it is the little one. They do not fight, but once in awhile the larger one asserts dominance. Did you breed yours? I am interested in breeding mine if I can get the eggs out before they become fish food.

my female is only about 2 1/2 inches. and i doubt my juvi even turned boy yet. from what i read, im not expecting much for at least a year or more. but when it starts happening, ill def give it a shot!!!

mmm... i think i have. ive seen one about 5 inches. pretty sure it was the mom of my juvi. and ive seen some other fairly large ones... how big is yours?

My big one is two inches, and my little one is 1.5 inches. Are the white striped Maroon Clowns less desireable than gold striped ones?

mine are gold striped. i like the color. i wouldent say they are less desirable, but ive read that the white stripes are much meaner..

My smaller maroon has all three yellow stripes. My Larger Maroon has mostly white stripes, but in the first stripe yeallow coloring can be seen. Is this going to be a problem if I breed these two? Will the babies be considered hybrids? What colors will the babies stripes be?

really? are you sure your not backwards?

juvinial gold stripes start off having white strips, then the one closest to the head starts to color in first. then im guessing it keeps going down the stripes. (i donno yet, my juvi only has one yellow stripe so far)
the yellow stripes can tell you about the age of them. so im suprized your female doesent have yellow yet, but your juvi does.

I suppose if your juvi stayed in a school a long time its possible.. i donno. need to look into that further.

My female I bought her with all her yellow stripes already, but she was bright red. now shes very very dark blackish maroon. The juvi is bright red.. pretty sure he'll stay that way

anyways.. all the babies will start off white striped :) but they'll turn yellow eventually.

here. found mine :)

I'll try to photo mine. But I think that there are two types of Maroon Clowns. One type has white stripes, one type has yellow stripes. If you go to this link you'll see, although the two types do have the same scientific name. I guess they are from different parts of the world according to Dr. F & S. Ooops the link will not work. Go to live aquaria on Dr. Foster & Smith, and under fish do a search for Maroon.....The two types will show up.

there ARE two types. gold stripes, and white stripes. but gold stripes dont get there gold till later. i must have miss understood you. so your female is a white stripe and you juvi is a gold stripe?

i donno what the compatabilities would be with that. they physically LOOK different, body shape and stripe shape etc. Ive been packing so i cant look, but do you have joyce wilkersons book 'clownfishes'? that answers most of my questions

My little one is gold striped. The little one has all three gold stripes. My bigger one has a little gold in it's first stripe. I paid $35 for the little one, and $15 for the big one. On Foster & smith it looks like there are two types that come from three, or 4 different locations, so it is possible that the strains vary among gold striped, and white striped. In any event mine are getting along, and seem to be becoming friends. I think that they will breed as well as any other pair of Maroon Clowns. When I bred Cichlids, mixing different strains (of Labidochromis Caeruleus for example) was frowned upon, but not unforgiveable. Only mixing of different species form the same genus, or different species was unforgivable. Like mixing Pseudotropheus Red Zebra, with Pseudotropheus Blue Zebra was not allowed. But breeding two different stains (different collecting points evolve slightly differently of the same fish) of Pseudotropheus Red Zebra was OK. So as long as the two are both Maroon Clowns which they are I guess I should be OK. The larger one has a little gold in it's first stripe, and if it gets fully gold over time then that is fine with me. I'm guessing that babies between these two types would have fairly gold stripes at some point in their life. Yes it is my little one with all three gold stripes. Check Foster & Smith when you get some time.

ok then im back to wondering why your larger one still hasent colored out. the only conclusion i have is it was with a school mom and a pop, and became over a yr old with out being able to mature..

I asked this question about maroons awhile back because ive noticed some gold stripes are thick, with a bump on the middle stripe, while others are thin striped that look more ragid sorta. the answer i got was diff locations. but ya, as far as i can see mixing the two should be fine
