Maroon Clowns??

I went to a lfs and they have a couple of maroon clowns. One white and one yellow. What I would like to know if anyone has ever had a tear drop gold stripe maroon? All 3 stripes were tear drops and thought it was the coolest maroon clown I have seen. I am going back sunday to see if the still have it, to get it. My other question is, can I get this little guy from one lfs and another slightly larger one from a different lfs the same day? Would there any agression problems between the 2 of them?

Also what anemone could I get for them if I can have the pair? My tank is almost six months old and would like to get an anemone that is hardy as well.

It's likely fine to put the 2 from different stores together.

As for the anemone, maroons are pretty tough on them as they really rub into them and beat them. Someone else will have to recommend something suitable. I have RBTAs and I'd be concerned about them with maroons.

Entacmea quadricolor (either rose or green) is the natural host for maroons. So, I would recommend a nice size E. quadricolor, with the proviso that an anemone is going to need good strong lighting and very good water conditions. What's your lighting, nitrates, water flow, ph, specific gravity, temp., etc.?

Lighting is a 260 watt coralife pc. power heads are maxi jet 1200 (2x), hydor korilia #3. PH 8.3, temp 77, ammonia 0, nitrite and nitrate o. 80lbs live rock, 60 lbs live sand.

You may need stronger lighting (t-5, MH), even with the high-wattage you have with the pc (from what I've heard recently on the forums). I'm certainly not an expert, and have read a few posts where people have successfully kept anemones with pc alone.

I just got a GBTA and maroon clown 2 days ago and the GBTA is already hosting the clown. Good luck!

PC's can work as long as the bulbs aren't too old (<9 months) and the anemone is kept within a foot or so of the bulbs. Also, you will want the bulbs to be daylight, actinic is useless in terms of the light spectrum anemones need.

anyone has ever had a tear drop gold stripe maroon?

Most likely, he/she is an older maroon (4-5 years+). GSMs loose bottom halves of the stripes with age. Females loose them faster than males. How big is GSM in question?

Well I got the maroon clown and it is just shy of 2 inches. I would like to know if this maroon is already a female or is it still possible to get a larger maroon to try to get it to be a mated pair?

Maroon clowns are very aggressive. if the larger one has been housed alone with no other clowns it is most likly a female and will stay that way. if you put a smaller clown in with that female she most likly will kill it. Maroon clowns are difficult to mate. the male needs to be very small. if you put them in the tank together this might lesson the aggression? its a chance you will take.
I hope this helps.

How long will it be to find out if the clown will be female. I would like to see if I can get them to breed? I would like to get the tear drop gene to be prominent when breeding. There is 2 ocellaris in the same tank with it but the tank is divided so there wont be any fights.

most of the time the largest in a group is the female and she has several male counterparts. if a clown is by itself and grows up this way it is a female and will not change. and if you happen to find another female and she is still young and smaller than the one you have she will change sex . or if you happen to fine two small young maroons housed together or from a group they will adapt and change to make pair.

How do you tell the age of a maroon? Is it possible that mine is still young enough to possibly change sex if I get a larger clown? Or should I get a smaller maroon to try to get them to become a mated pair?

SO do I have to post pictures to get a reply??

Here are some pics I just took of the little guy/girl.

So please let me know what everyone thinks of this.:)

I just bought in tiny (inch long) Ora bred GSM yesterday. On their web site is says

"This species also seems the most likely to show mis-bars, and has a higher percentage of incomplete striping than other species."

Mine was in with other misbars and was the only one with full stripes (still white) that I could find.

Your fish is beautiful.

Ok - as for your age/sex question... It's harder than just what you're asking because age really doesn't factor into when they develop either male or female. It's more environment. For example - in the wild - if a bunch of babies group together - 2 will become dominate - one male and one female and then the others may live simply as juvinelles for years until one of the pair dies and someone takes it's place. Gold Striped Maroons (GSM) usually start to develop their 'gold' around 1 year.

If it were me - and I were you. I would get as small of one as you can find and then try that. But there are steps you should take to keep it protected. Let me know if you want more info on that or if you already know... then ignore me! :)

Just trying to help - I know it can be frustrating not to get answers... Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
