maroon gold stripe clowns fighting

i bought 2 gold striped clowns at the pet store who was in the same tank one is bigger than the other. the bigger one is now beating the shiat outta the smaller one in my tank..... why would they just start fighting now that i get em home?

i know maroons are aggressive but they seemed fine at the lps.

What size tank are they in? How many clowns were in the tank at the LFS?

20 long and just those 2 clowns were in there

How big exactly are they?

Seems like the larger one (possibly female) is reassuring her dominance over the smaller male. Get a small clear breeder box and put the smaller male inside that for a few hours. The female will still be able to see the male and she will assert her dominance without harming him.

This is also the way to "pair" most maroons. I have a pair of GSM's also.

You never know what will happen when you move them over from one place to the next. Clowns can be finicky. I had a bonded pair of tomato clowns that got moved from one place to another and when I moved them the female killed the male (30 gallon tank they moved into) and I currently have a pair of skunk clowns that were bonded in the store but when I moved them into my tank (300 gallon) the female claimed an anemone and the male lives behind a return on the other side of the tank and she won't let him in no matter how much he tries.

i was going to just go back to the store with the fish and buy a mated pair thats laying eggs but i dont wanna spend more money if the pair will split lol. the ones i got are female is 3 inches and the male is about 2 inches maybe a lil bit bigger

My white striped Maroon clowns were not fighting, but the female did not seem interested in him. The first night they slept together. The 2nd night they were apart. 4 days later, I bought a GBTA large enough to host both of them. They have not been apart since then.

I may need some help with this in the future. I bought one and was told to wait until it got a little bigger then buy another smaller one and they would do better. Any other opinions on this?

In my understanding they all start off as juveniles with the most dominant one progressing to a female and the next most dominant progressing to a male. So, I think that unless they have already turned into a male and female, you're basically looking at them needing to establish dominance so they'll battle at least a little bit. I've paired up a male and female that each lost a mate and they took a few hours to get together, but I've also seen where they run into issues with each other when they are too similar in size.

went back to the store bought an older mated pair who lay eggs instead of dealing with mating em up haha. threw a gbta in there and they went straight in it
