Maroon mating time

For some time I've been wanting to attempt to pair my 3.5" - 4" yellow stripe maroon clown that's been living in my rose bubble tip anenome for well over a year. I've had the clown for probably 3 years now and he's been a real meanie, so I was quite concerned since he's never allowed another fish to get comfortable in the 20 ish gallon pentagon tank, with the exception of an algae blenny I've had in there for a couple months.

After soliciting feedback in another thread, I called every LFS only to learn that noone had a small yellow stripe maroon. I've heard yellow stripes are rare among tank raised, so I decided to try a white stripe maroon to be politically and environmentally correct.

What follows is my documented efforts of this pairing.

Here is a look at the rose and current inhabitant.

He's been quite a brat with other fish as well as my hand when I clean the inside of the tank. Here is a full tank shot which is narrowed to just the front viewing panel because of the distortion of the curved acrylic of the pentagon

I found the white stripe at Petco (I know), and figure he's just about an inch and a bit. Here he (hopefully) is acclimatizing to the tank. You'll notice that the anenome has shrunk back behind the rockwork as he usually does when I clean the inside acrylic for maintenance and/or clearer pictures.

I read on several pairing threads to put a clear bottle with holes cut in it, into the tank to allow the small clown to seek protection away from the big one. I used a 1 liter bottle with probably 10 holes cut in about the size of the smaller fish. Here I'm adding the small clown to the bottle.

After placing the bottle in the tank, the new white stripe swam in the bottle for about a minute or so...the yellow stripe showed some interest in the new guy, but no aggression at all. I was optimistic.

Shortly thereafter, the white stripe ventured outside the safety bottle and after 3 minutes of submissive behavior, such as sideways shaking, they have been buddies and have been hanging out close together in the deflated anenome.

I am waiting for my rose to come back to full size after the acrylic scrub to take some more pictures for our viewing pleasure. At this point, I am cautiously optimistic and hopeful that this marriage and the honeymoon endures.

Thanks Mecher. I'm surprised at how easily they adapted to each other but recognize it's still too early to call it a done deal. I'm feeling lucky though.

UPDATE on new pair

UPDATE on new pair

Well, the young couple slept close together overnight and have apparently made their vows without many arguments. Here's a full tank shot with the expanded RBTA

Here's the couple enjoying separate rooms

and here they are together as they have been for most of the morning

I haven't seen anything close to aggressive behavior from the big momma so it looks like these two are destined for a happy relationship.

Color me happy!

Wow! Very nice job matchmaking there. I'm tempted to try to find my GSM a mate. She's so belligerent I assumed it would be pain to find her a match. Mine too came from Petco, and I've said this before, I think the tank-bred clowns they sell are good buys, very hardy and reasonably priced. Giant petstore chains aren't where I would direct someone to buy saltwater animals usually, but I would be the first to send someone to Petco for tank-bred clowns.

For anyone in this area, there is a Petco in Pasadena that has a well-run saltwater section. They usually have in stock tank-bred black/white ocellaris, maroons, etc. and some decent soft corals and anemones including LTA's and BTA's.

That method almost always works. I came up with that method a while back on one on my fw setups. When I came to salt, it was already an adopted concept. :D

Thanks Gary. Mine was pretty good at taking out new tank mates but this seemed too easy. Maybe having the algae blenny around for a couple months got her used to another fish.

That's true about Petco doing well with tank raised clowns. I'm not sure, but I think I also got the big gold stripe there. I also got a pajama cardinal from them in my nano at work. My local store is not too good with the nems though.

I appreciate the posts on this site for providing the guidance for the bottle method. It seemed simple enough, but with the limited time that the new one stayed in the bottle, I really don't think it was the technique as much as the match of the fish. I'll certainly use it the next time however.

So I've been reading some of the breeding threads, and now that they are a pair, I'm wondering does anybody have a reasonable idea about what sort of percentages of maroons nest? I read somewhere that maroon breeders are more rare. Not that it really matters but I enjoyed having cichlid babies before and this would be cool to share with my 9 year old son.

Thanks for your comments.

Nice job man. GSMs are the hardest to pair up. For anyone who's thinking about it read the FAQ in this forum...very informative.

i was scared to death to try an pair my girl because she is MEAN....blood drawing biting mean. after reading everything i could i took the plunge and decided to try and pair her up. i waited probably 1.5 years to find the perfect suitor because it's tough to find a good candidate in LFSs. i tried the seperation technique just like gawf4fun and the same exact scenario played out. good luck to all who try.

Congratulations on your success Kobes. I guess this method does work almost all the time! LOL.

Nobody has answered the question yet about percentage of GSM's spawning. It would be nice to know if it's a rarity, or if we actually have a shot.

mine are spawning. i noticed the male hanging out around the back of the anemone a lot so i took a closer look. sure enough he was back there fanning the egg cluster. i'm going to setup a rock next to the anemone to see if she'll lay the eggs on it so i can put it in a QT. the female gets A LOT meaner when there's eggs to care for.

Update on recently paired GSM's

Update on recently paired GSM's

Well, I was scrubbing the algae on the inside of the tank today and my female gold stripe maroon was particularly feisty, especially as my hand got closer to the right side of the tank. i took a closer look and lo and behold...here's what I found

I'm completely unprepared to do anything with them at this point, but I'll be moving a tile into the tank and see if I can create some mobility options for future clutches to try a little husbandry.

Thanks Ocellaris123. I appreciate it. I'm looking forward to seeing how things develop now over the next few months..
