Maroun.c 390 G build thread

Wow excellent planning and superb execution!!
Very innovative idea on the water change system. "The no more hoses and buckets" water change plan is just great 

Do keep updating!! Waitin to see your final scape, which will be cool I'm sure

Happy Reefing!!

Thanks Reef Noob,
The water change system should make my life much easier...
Still got a few things to finsih with the wood cabinets and installing bolts in the ceiling for the light rack... which require standing in the tank so scaping will have to wait.

Lets call it Semi Auto water change:lmao: as I'm still hesitating to go with an automated water change system as I just wouldn't trust it while I'm traveling...

i would keep it semi. that is what i am doing. I can stand there and wait for it to drain/fill

And another setback.
I took down the 150 G just before a 2 weeks travel and washed all the sand and kept the LR in a barrel with clean saltwater and good flow...traveled and after 3 days got the call from my parents that the barrel with rocks was sticking and the whole place smelled unbearable with water looking very dirty...
Flew back a couple of days later hoping it was just a small minicycle and that rinsing the rocks with saltwater would allow me to save it as it's 12 years old LR... upon going out to the balcony and smelling how bad it was depsite many fans blowing smell outside i realized it was a total loss. water was black and rocks smelled worse than the ugliest smell you can imagine, and was covered with black slime. I rinsed it in freshwater and got rid of the black slime but it still smelled bad so I realized there were some things still rotting inside the rock and as I ahd to travel out for 5 more days i didn't want o risk another week of bad smell at my parents place so I decided to risne it a few times and then soak it in diluted bleach for a week before I fly back.
it was the first time I examine my rocks from close and I was amazed with the amount of coraline and especially the multilayers of corlaine one above the other forming really thick coraline plates of pink, purple and orange color...
pics of the rocks after washing them to get rid of the black slime and before the bleach bath.

Luckily a few rocks were taken to the frag tank and its sump and to the 390G tank sump where my fish are so those will help in seeding the cleaned rocks and sand when the 390 is started but that will definitly make the start more difficult and increase the risk of a cycle... On the positive part I got to get rid of some aptasias I was struggling with still not a major issue as well as some nitrates in the rocks that the 150G was struggling with in the lates stages...
Not sure what was the cause of this as I made sure to take out any sponges on the rocks which can start a crash when they are exposed to air. all the rocks were rinsed in saltwater before being taken to the barrel and it had a good circulation in the barrel, wish I added some filtration to it though...

Dear Maroun,

we are glad to hear that you are still pleased.
You did a very good job with gluing the broken pieces:thumbsup:
It is not necessary to cure the ceramic because after burning we put it for some days into a special flushing to minimize the risk of absorbing substances you don't need in your tank. I'll send you a new user manual for starting up we finished yet for further information. In the next days we would attach this information also to our new homepage.
We wish you a lot of pleasure and success with your beautiful tank!

Many thanks to everybody for the compliments!!

Best Regards,

Wolfgang & Susanne

Wow nice to see a vendor follwoing up one of their customers build thread.
Quite impressed with the quality of your Ceramics and Customer service as per maroun's input.
Any links to your homepage if that's allowed on RC?

Very Sorry to hear about your LR issues. Definilty a shame to loose all the live in them as well as the coraline growth. I'm sure it'll be back in no time though. Do you worry about the LR and Cermaics not looking good together in one tank?

Ohhhh it's really sad to hear about the live rock issue :(
Those live rocks looked so beautiful with the coralline and colours.
Is it coz the freshly mixed saltwater yu put em in was not likely the same parameters as the water they were already in? Um IMHO opinion wouldv been better if you had mixed some old tank water( the water the live was in already) with new mixed saltwater or used the same old tank water and transferred into the temporary holding bin. And also temperature can be a factor in organism death.
The smell is definitely due to bacterial death.
Murphy' s law proven right again. Things do go wrong when we are not around and in worst possible time :(

Your build is coming together really well and waiting for more updates.
Happy Reefing!!

Thanks Aquafred,
I know initially they'll look weird while the rock is still showing. bt when they both get covered with coraline and the corals grow up the difference wouldn't be visible. the rest of the scape with the LR is designed to be somehow similar to the shape of the ceramic so if I'm able to do that (hate scaping) it shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks Reef Noob.
I didn't put them in new saltwater. When I started taking down the tank I filled a few bucket of water bfore any detritus was stirred out of the rocks while removing them then i took out the rocks one by one and shook them in the remaing water in the tank to take out the massive detritus stuck in them then placed them in the barrel with some circulation. Temperature is quite moderate around this time fo the year 24-26 degrees celsius (around 76-80) which should have been fine for the LR and whatever critters was in them.
I'm sure i'll get a coraline cover back in no time especially with some rocks that I moved to my frag tank and sump and which are still live but the worst part is I could have gone with more ceramics if I knew i would loose my live rocks...
The good part is that now it's aptasia free and without whatever nitrates and phosphates it has absorbed when my water paratemers weren't at their best in the last stages.
Definilty Murphy at it's best.
Build us supposed to pick up a bit as I'm trying my best to have the tank running by end of the year, yet with my busy travel schedule for the coming period looks like things will slow down again.

On a bright note my light rack design was finished and I placed the order yesterday before heading to UK for a week. should receive and install it when I get back by end of coming week.

Well guess you did things right.
Yes pretty sure those rocks gonna colour up pretty awesome in no time too :)
Good luck to ya and hoping for updates as soon as ya back from ur trip.
Show us all what goodies you gonna bring from UK :D

Thanks Reef Noob. Uk Trip ended up with just Berghas that I'm trying to raise into a colony... Since then been flying non stop so not much was done on the tank.
Live rock has been soaked in bleach and then rinsed over a couple of weeks and kept in the sun so it's ready to be reseaded....

Light rack plan was finalized.

And after minor modification Light rack was finally done.

Should be back home in a week to suspend it and work on a pulley system to raise and lower the rack (Still not sure if I should automate or just keep it manual...) The good thing with Lumenbrights is that lights are already high from water level and allow you to work in the tank without needing to move them up each time unless you're doing extensive maintenance.
