MARS update

I may just wait till the first of 2014 to try and start MARS up when things settle down. If there is perceived drama going on, people taking sides, tension, etc, there is no sense in starting something new, it's counterproductive and will fail. I want ALL people to feel included and to participate. I don't feel that that is going to happen at this time. I want the hobby and the local marine interests to be first and foremost, fun for everyone involved, and an enjoyable experience. I feel it will be best to wait and make a go of things next year. We'll shoot for a spring frag swap that doesn't interfere with Nashvilles. Saves me work for the time being anyways, ha. I want to just enjoy the hobby and my tank. That's what I plan on doing. :)

Would it really benefit overall to have a novice, intermediate, and advanced sections within the postings here and on Facebook? I know everyone has their own setup but for those who are looking to get into the hobby would need a general set of guidelines to go by. A realistic budget for what's involved. Some video(s) of setups and how they operate. My point being, keeping new members or interested parties from pulling their hair out, is a really good way to keep "it" all going.

I've thought several time agout making youtube videos on 'how to' before. Good idea for the future.

I support the use of technology like Facebook, forums, and other social media for club integration and communication. I support frag swaps and getting together for those large events on rare occasions (too many can have a negative impact on a club). I agree that WTMRAC probably had some outdated methods that never aged or moved on with the trends of new technology and trends/desires/demands of new member behavior.

Well, As far as I know, WTMRAC used facebook, forums, website, frag swap and an outdated home visiting method all together. Nothing new in MARS so far.

Sometimes your old car just gets dated, doesn't perform as well.......can't dwell on it, you have to move on and get a new one that makes you happy. I think that's what MARS intentions were. He didn't start MARS and throw a big F U to the haters. He just wanted to move on. The first week there was more activity than the last 3 months of the other forum. That was exciting! The pictures and talk and answered questions on Facebook was engaging!

Yeah he put his foot in his mouth a little with the charity rant....but i think it stemmed from an early merger style frag swap funded by WTMRAC, a passing of the torch ceremony (from what i read) that quickly became a we quit, but now you can't have sh... I don't think he actually meant he (MARS) deserves the funds more than St. Jude. I believe it was more of venting after being kicked in the teeth.

Honestly though I think it'll be fine and I think MARS could be very successful....just means MARS will have to be built (and funded) from the ground up which honestly will make it stronger than having received help at least financially.

There can be something that I don't know or imagine. but in my opinion, if MARS had accepted the torch ceremony, everything would have been smoother than now.

I am really hoping that there will be sometime of group or if it is just the people of the area communicating via forum, facebook, meeting in public and discussing the reef hobby. I just find this hard to believe even though I can somewhat believe the bickering and problems. I am greatly enjoying the reef hobby, as well as enjoying the forums. Hopefully something will get going on this.

This is all crazy.
Jay P. you have a great idea with the MARS group.
Don't give up on it so fast.
Sit back and enjoy life and reefing as much as you can.
Stress can do a lot of bad things to a person. As per my last post in mars group on face book.
As for pod casts and such things that is something that needs to happen because it helps those that have to work crazy hours and shifts at there jobs be a part by hearing what goes on first hand at meetings. ( I brought the idea up about 2 years ago and nothing went with it)
I know I don't live in Memphis and that seams to be the topic that Memphis needs a reef club.
We all need a Group that is put in place to better everyone's knowledge in this hobby.
And MARS can be just that.
Member ships are a must the $ that are taken in can little by little allow things like the pod casts and video tutorials and such.

Sorry for rambling on but my thoughts are forget what happened with the old reef club and its money.
It is time for something new. So lets all see the positive side of this and help Jay P pull this off because it will help us all in the future.
