MARS Web Site

MandM, that would be me who is maintaining it. If anyone is interested in helping maintaining it, please let me know. I have been neglecting it since I have been busy at work, personal life, and a new hobby. :D If anyone is willing to write content, I'd be happy to update them.

That's next, along with the contacts. Then the beginner's corner...
Kinetic, thanks for the offer, I may have questions. I'm learning asp and stylesheets like I learned assembler, deep end of the pool. You don't have to compile this new-fangled sissy web stuff though, instant gratification. ;)

Shiela - thanks for the update. BTW - if you want to go with php instead of ASP - please let me know. I would actually perfer to get a webhosting company with PHP / MySQL. :D

I wouldn't know the difference if I stepped in it :D so whatever you want to use is cool with me. I'm having fun learning. I sit next to the other web developers here so I'll have help if I ask. Let's discuss at the Aug meeting, I'll bring my notes and questions.

Content Management System

Content Management System

Thank you Minh for all the hard work. I know how difficult it can be to keep the website up to date.

Tools like FrontPage require technical skills to setup and to maintain a website. Content management systems like vbPortal (ReefCentral) and DotNetNuke require technical skills to setup but only require computer literacy to maintain.

Content Management systems tend not to be uglier than tools like FrontPage. I believe making it as easy as possible to keep the website current should be a higher priority than making the website pretty.

Whatever software the new webmaster ends up using I hope it is a content management system that allows end users (the board members) to maintain their respective pages w/o webmaster skills or intervention.

I still have a DotNetNuke server set up. If we have a new webmaster this year I will make it available to him or her.

Re: Content Management System

Just a little background on the website and webmaster position. In 2004 (?), our club elected a webmaster. During the first 6 months or so, nothing got done on our website. A lot of people got on his case (me included) about getting the website updated. The old webmaster resigned. Next thing I know - I was the webmaster (without me even knowing about it). All my close friends knew that this was not a position I wanted, but I reluctantly agreed to do the technical aspect of the website as long as someone did the contents. Several people offered to help with content, but in the end, no one ever did anything (except recently when Shiela updated the events page). Since no one really wanted to contribute, I figured why should I put in the effort. So I went on with other activities in my life.

This isn't something new to me. I have helped other websites where no one provided content, so the websites went stale. I have also done other websites where content was provided to me, so the website is always up to date. Right now - I am helping with a rottweiler rescue website, and content is provided to me several times a week. BTW - I have heard some people complain about the newsletter as well. Same story - VERY FEW people contributed to the newsletter. But yet, a lot of people complained that it wasn't being published.

Honestly - I don't have any bitterness towards this. It's nothing new to me at all. I am just trying to lay out the facts.

My new hobby is scuba diving. I took a 4 week course. Now I am just practice diving before I go for my advanced open water. BTW - I never knew Monterey Bay had so much marine life. There's anemones, nudibranchs, gobies, and so on. Sure it's not as nice as the reef, but it sure has a lot of interesting life. Going to Cozumel in September for a week for my honeymoon and diving. :D

BTW - I am always looking for people to go diving with. It can be local (Folsom Lake) or as far as MB.

Minh,
PM me if you want to setup a dive trip. I can do either local or Monterey, etc.
Have you dove Pt. Lobos down there yet? If not, make it a priority. You have to make reservations, but it is worth it. How about Monastery?

With a little bit of work (Hint, hint) we could take my boat down there and make a weekend of it. There's no better way to hit the good dive spots down there as from a boat.
Let me know.
Thanks,
Donovan
