I have a true perc that has been in my tank for about 5 months and I want to get another true perc. The one I want to get is a female and has laid eggs before, so I was wondering if it would be ok to get it, cuz idk if the one in my tank is sexed yet.

how big is perc in the tank?

If the fish is only 5-6 months old I would guess you could be ok (that is about how long i had a solo maroon until I got a female) but you never know.

If you are buying the other perc locally you could always explain your situation and pehaps they could take it back if things dont work out.

A word of caution, if the fish was a mature male already, it's possible for it to be well on it's way to become a female. If you really want that spawning female, I'd say the absolute safest is to buy that female, find a second very small fish (juvi from an LFS or local breeder) and pair those two up. Otherwise, be careful shen introducing them and have an exit plan readily available in case of excessive fighting.
