Mate for C. interrupta

Kickstarter is basically a way for small companies or individuals to raise money towards a certain goal or project. Things can raise from raising money for a documentary to money for a new 3d printer invention.

Usually there is a goal that they need to get to that they try to raise, which can be exceeded. Donations at different tiers get different prizes, ranging from t-shirts to actual products.

Well there may be some challenges to this but we'll see if we can work it out.

A_Z was correct in that Live Aquaria does not ship to Hawaii. I talked with someone on the phone and then sent an email that I hope gets to Kevin K. I can deal with the permit and there may be other shipping options so I hope he will make an exception.

I read through the kickstarter website and although I'm not sure that this project will fit in there, they seem open minded about what they take on. There is a 5% charge for using them but the good thing is that people who donate are not charged for their donation until the goal of the project has been reached. It looks like it takes 3 business days to set up an account if there are no problems.

Wayne had a question regarding those who contribute more than $100 (or purchase more than one raffle ticket). I think it should be that what you contribute is what you get back as a discount if you purchase a fish in the future. That is my way of giving back for your generosity and commitment to captive bred fish.

So we'll have to see if that lovely interrupta can make her way to Hawaii and if I can go through kickstarter to put it all together.

And last but certainly not least, MikeandNicole have generously offered to send their C. joculator as a mate for Fabio which I think would still be an excellent project and would also make Yurivd very happy!:spin1:

I'll keep you posted.
Karen

I don't have the money too buy an interruptus, but I would love a CB bandit more then anything. You have my contribution

Someone asked for a list of who is interested:

Aquaph8
Humaguy
Sedgro
WayneL333
Tactics
Acesq
Alberta-newb
Mikeandnicole
Rayl

Good luck with this project

Just my 2 cents:

first off, paka (aka Karen) is probably the nicest and most honest person i have ever met. I have personally given her many many fish towards her efforts of breeding (including the Latz !)

2nd - there is no guarantee on when/what/how you can get tank bred angels - if it was easy more would do it ! A lot can go wrong in a short amount of time, so if you're looking for a quick turn around i wouldn't recommend putting the money into the pot (although it is a very nice gesture)

I would highly recommend anther interruptus vs a hybrid of sorts. Hybrids are very cool, but they seem to be the best when nature does them accidentally. They could all be awesome, or all ugly... lol.

I think this is a fantastic idea and going to a person well worth the time and respect she has gotten.

and even if we don't end up each getting a fish the knowledge Karen will gain will continue to further her breeding endeavors...
if find this to be immensely promising....
so in....

Some of you have asked for information and photos so I have some links here for what I have been working on more recently. The larval ornamental fish work is done in my garage in my free time. I also raise common clowns to sell to retail stores locally which is what has been funding the angelfish work.

I'll get some photos of my place posted as well.

Here are some photos

Well I am such a computer idiot that attaching these photos just took me forever! And I'm not sure why they seem to have attached in different ways. I also had a movie of Fabio and the bandits but it says invalid when I try to load it. OH well, just more for me to learn.

The photos are of my larval rearing tanks. The one with the pvc T and blurry little specs is the larvae inside a rearing tank (specs are the larvae).
The photo of the eggs incubating in the jar also has the yellow ruler in front with a dead larval angel on it and yes the larvae really are that red in color at that age.
In the background is algae cultures behind the curtain and copepod cultures in the buckets

Thank you so much for sharing, any information on captive breeding techniques is so difficult to obtain for novices like me.

Are you using parvocalanus as first food only or using other species to supplement?

Francis

outstanding!

Here is an update on what I've been putting together.

Frank B. told me that his captive bred interrupta started spawning at a size smaller than 2 inches so the 2.5 fish on DD should be of reproductive size. He also thought this was a cool thread and is impressed with you all wanting to help out. :)

I'm looking into other sources for C. interrupta since we still don't know if Live Aquaria will make an exception and ship to Hawaii. That fish is also very expensive although it does have value in having been with them for several months. It may be better to get an interruptus from Japan shipped directly to Hawaii which can be ordered after we have the funding and I'm looking into the possibility and cost of that option. The funding websites recommend that the funding period be approx 30 days and it is 10 to 14 working days after the funding period ends before the funds are released. I am going for the all or nothing type of funding so that if the goal is not met you all get refunded. I'm not sure what the best funding period would be for this. If I make it too short we may not reach the goal. Any thoughts on that?

I'm not able to use kickstarter because they do not allow a raffle or coupon type reward system so I am in the middle of putting something together on indiegogo. The drawback with them is that you would all be charged for the donation rather than not charged until it reaches it goal. You do get refunded if we do not reach the goal but there will be a 3% processing fee per refund.
Just want to keep you all informed and get any feedback you may have.

agree with getting Koji involved...though I still believe Kickstarter is the best route...just toss in different investment amounts as opposed to a raffle system...maybe a $1,000, 2 $500, and 10 $100...that is only 13 investors which keeps things cozy...having 30 $100 investors gets crowded for this type of project, though I doubt it would get to 30 as some will most def invest more than once...

I wish there was a central location where we could all view these group/crowd funding requests. I would honestly support a lot more of them if I knew about them. Especially initiatives like these which have huge long term impacts and not just on the immediate trade, but also on the peripheries, e.g. when information about breeding techniques are shared.

I would definitely donate to something like this or a similar project like Allmost mentioned.

Ezmarine sale interrupta for $850 medium size

Karen, I'm in which ever route you choose and I really don't want a refund because I know it'll be used well regardless of which fish you end up with. I just wish I had more to give.

btw, my thoughts regarding an interrupta that is not as costly as Kevin's is, personally, I would like to see at least $3,000-3,500 raised at a very minimum...as I just mentioned to Karen, I would advise to open a PayPal account and we just dump funds into it and Karen uses it as she sees fit...the downside of PP is we "investors" can't see how much is being donated...
regardless of the investment housing the caveat for any potential "investor" is that there is no guarantee that you will ever receive a fish...
each "investment" is made solely out of our love for fish and the hobby and for our appreciation of what Karen has already accomplished and our combined hope for her future breeding successes...
we will, of course, expect a dedicated thread in here (perhaps a dedicated webpage) with frequent updates and pictures...
just my .02 regarding The Interrupta Project...

I've been reading along with this thread, and I must say your work is fantastic. I've read about your successes in the past, but was not 100% sure as to who the successor was. The support provided here is very deserving IMO. Although I'm still learning, angel fish have become very interesting to me, and I hope to have some of the rarer species one day.. I would gladly donate towards this project!
