Matrix (and siporax) questions, to keep from derailing Sahin's thread.....

Yes, my sump has three sections . Attached is an old picture of my sump. It is a typical DSB arrangement.

At first glance, the flow seems to be fairly strong at the top. However, my observation suggests that judging from the detritus accumulation on the egg crate and to my surprise, there appears to be even flow around the media basket (see the second photo). I have also checked the right and left hand side of the cage, detritus accumulation seems to be even in there too. For certainty there needs to be a better way of measuring flow to eliminate guess work.

Actually, imo, your sump is arranged ideally for this purpose. Baffles are under-over then over-under, which is makes main flow take place at top part of middle section.
And I believe this is the best arrangement for denitrificating siporax. Oxygen and nitrate rich water passes from the top which makes a slow turbulence. This way, bottom part remains lesser oxygenated compared to top, allowing Anaerobic denitrification bacteria to establish, especially in the bottom-central parts of your siporax arrangement. Then, why they dont consume all the nitrates, because you are feeding the siporax section with oxygen-rich water, also (of course, not enough siporax can be another exp.).
I think, the best way to let denitrifying bacteria establish is allow them to consume the existing oxygen, and then start eating nitrates. And this requires to stop feeding oxygenated water for certain time intervals. My plan is placing eggcrate box in another glass box higher then sump water level and feeding it with a small pump, on timer. Frequent nitrite and nitrate tests may tell me when to flush the container containing siporax cage.

May be you use filter socks to filter detritus to keep your sump and tank clean, whereas I do not.

Right you are, IMHO it is important to keep ditritus from settling on the media. I also run a 6045 mounted low but directed on a upward angle to create a cross current to the water flowing thru the sump.

Use of a pump in my sump would be counter productive in my case because that would stir detritus accumulated at the bottom of the sump section in which the media box is situated. I do not use any filter socks to allow detritus to settle in my sump so as to be able to provide food many life forms that appear to thrive, such as barnacles, pods, bristle worms, feather dusters. Pods in particular enter and leave the display tank constantly providing food to anthias and other fish.

I plan to rinse my siporax box and the media in it once every six months just to ensure that siporax's performance is not affected by detritus.

+ 1 ^

For the same reason I do not have any mechanical removal/filtration of detritus in my tank. I have my Matrix in bags and every XX months (when I saw them with enought detritus ) I took them out and rinse them during a WC.

I moved from Virginia to Oklahoma in early 2014. I had to sell my reef tank rather than risk killing everything. Neighbor had her own tank maint business and was rather good at reef keeping. So I sold it to her for a good deal.

I never ran a sump on that tank for 12 years. I always ran a canister with half matrix rocks, half eheim substrat pro- NEVER had phosphates or Nitrates. Ever.

The LFS owners around town couldnt believe it. I told them I would put $50 store credit on the table if he could bring any test kit to show my tank has phosphates- he could even come in person.

I won that bet.

It DOES produce quite a bit of bubbles as it does its conversions- just a heads up.

I just started up a 70gal reef with a sump (this time) and am working on implementing more of the matrix rocks around the water coming into the sump. No canister....yet. ;)

When I had my FO tank back in the eighties I ran two Eheim canisters with the same exact type of media that the Siporax, is but it was eheim media. I had a crazy bio load no skimmer no live rock and a undergravel filter. What is old is new again.

I have been using the marine pure blocks for well over a year in my tanks also just ordered a bunch more from the bra sale. I haven't seen any adverse affects of aluminum just make sure to rinse n soak them well in RO they can be a bit dusty from shipping.

I just received 30 Litres of Siporax from that Austrian dude on ebay. Wow... that was fast!! Exactly 1 week from ordering! One small problem... he sent me 30L.... in a box.... not packaged up....loose... 30 frickn" Litres of little pasta wannabees....'
I did a group order for a bunch of peeps here in Toronto and now I have to figure out how much 1 Litre is and divide it up.... a 30L box... mutherfather!!!!

If you're sure it's 30 litres you are going to have to weigh the total and divide by 30, then distribute accordingly. I'm sure there is some science guy out there with the equation but if you have an accurate scale you should be good to go.

Thanks guys. Very helpful info. My plan was to weigh it all and divide by 30. Knowing what 1 package should weigh is way easier.
A fellow reefer has some scales and has offered to help!
I was pretty choked when I opened the box.... he did send me a nice Sera Calendar....:blown:

As long as new and unused, weighing method works. With time, they lose flesh (mostly friction) and once get wet, forget about weighing. They do not release all the water no matter what.

In such case, you can use kitchen measurement cups with a scale on it. Tested. fill until approx. 1 liter mark and prepare the shares, if last one stays on low, steal one ring from all the other bags :)
