Matrix (and siporax) questions, to keep from derailing Sahin's thread.....

Before I proceed to the construction of the matrix reactor I have one more question I can not answer. In this thread, there is a lot of anectodal evidence that denitrification do occur in siporax or matrix media in reef aquarium.

From the beginning I had two unanswered questions? Why those media works and do provide denitrification in our reefs nowdays and not a decade ago, when they were thought to create nitrates. The answer to this, I found it by denadai, and it is that nowdays we provide more food to our reefs or directly dose carbon, so the bacteria population are not carbon limited. It is a very reasonable answer.

But I can not find an answer why those media are not provide denitrification to fresh water systems? There is even anectodal evidence from fresh water aquarists ,that they even produce nitrates if they don't maintained properly. So if anyone can help me find an answer to the second question, I will be very grateful.

I have 3 freshwater tanks and I never thought in adding these media's because with all the planted algae and the undergrabel filtration (yes, I am using this old filtration system) is more than enought to reduce nitrates.

But Matrix, is also sold for freshwater tanks. It is just a substrate for bacteria growth and can work in any system (Marine and Freshwater). I expect the same from siporax.

You can see a lot of fresh water system using siporax and matrix in canister filters. Do a search in youtube and you will see

Denadai do you know why Carlinhos Moreno's , in this newer tank http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2389675 didn't use buckets of siporax and return to buckets with aragonite?

He is not using anymore the aragonite....he changed to a lot of live rocks now but he is getting hard time with his tank, algae problem and etc. You know....small tank small problems....huge tank huge problems :p

He told me that siporax was getting dirty and he had a lot of work to keep them clean.

But....everything get dirty....that´s why I think the best option for siporax is put them after filter sock and skimmer.

Best Regards

Yes nearly all of fresh water (not planted)aquarists use similar to siporax media in canister filters for..... nitrification! I couldn't find any anectodal evidence that they have achieved denitrification. The opposite.

I wonder where Denadai reported about this. Since I was already suspicious for a while about the amount/type of food supplied may effect performance of siporaxes, I asked this to Reefvet (few posts ago), and he answered even light feeding is enough for these media to function.

12x24". That is 12 liters of matrix, probably needs 20 more liters.

Sure? aren't you the one? :)))

I am sorry , I thought I have red it from you. Now I can not find where I have red it? But isn' t there a logic? More food for bacteria, support bigger populations, which can handle in turn more food for fish and corals.

It's going on my 1100 gallon system to replace my sulphur denitrator. Another experiment I suppose:D The sulphur denitrator works but is finicky.

It took quite some time to figure the size of the remaining objects in the room (they look like toys, in the pic :) )

In fact, you can use siporax or matrix in the sulfur reactor, are you using sulfur alone, filled to top?

If I measure ORP value in my matrix reactor , and try to keep the value between -200 to 0 , by manipulate the flow of the pump or even dosing carbon in it, will I enhance denitrification?

Mighty fine piece of equipment there Dave! :D
Was that unit your sulfur denitrator previously or did you get a new reactor? I ended up trying the marinepure block in my sump. The larger one, but will likely need to add another soon. I like the siporax too but I think they are all very similar in doings?

Corey

That is my new GEO 12x24" media reactor for Matrix. I currently have a 6x24" recirculating sulphur denitrator filled to the top completely with sulphur pearls.
