Matt's 225g Dream Build

Got my RapidLeds today. I bought the refugium kit which contains 3 white LEDs. Sick of looking at the cheap metal Home Depot light on my other refugium. I cut and painted a small piece of aluminum to mount the individual heat sinks on then I will suspend somehow to hang over the refugium. Not done mounting the LEDs and wiring yet.

For my return pump I went with a Waveline DC1200. I also went with a DC skimmer the Reef Life Support Systems R8-I. Originally I was sold on the Reef Octopus Elite 200 but they are on back order everywhere. Very happy with this skimmer once I received it. DC pumps should keep everything quiet and cool. I want to try to avoid having a big bulky chiller.

You mean like this....

I also have the same return pump as you. I only have it running on setting two right now. I would be interested to know how it works for you on full. I will be upgrading my sump soon, and will be pumping water from the basement to about 8 feet up.
As I type I am looking at Nineball's eye-candy youtube clip on my TV. I really think some coarse gravel would look better than BB. Just keep the flow high and have some critters that like to mix it up...

Keep it up.. I'm sure it will look stunning.

I considered the regal as well but there is another model called the Elite that I was looking at. What size tank are you looking to use the DC1200 on? Do you have the sump on a stand in the basement? I think max flow on this is 3100gph at 4ft. Or something like that. They have charts listed somewhere. Really depends on the tank size and how much flow you want. I doubt I will run it at full speed. Don't want the water going through the sump too fast.

The tank has been set up for a little over two years over the I beam in the family room. A 120 is as big as I dared go. The sump will go in the basement on a stand of 2 or 3 feet. I don't really have final plans for the design except the approximate dimentions . I want it to handle any future upgrades as well as serving any other tanks I want to add around the house. Everything I have sitting around the tank on the floor will go down with it, and clean up around the family room. The sump will be plywood with a 2x4 frame for strength, and will be 8 feet x 4 feet. I also have a 90 gal tall that I will take apart and use the glass for a viewing panel. I have been collecting stuff for an upgrade for a year or two. The tank volume calculator gives me a volume between 350 and 500 gal depending on water height. It will be an all in one filter/frag tank and other stuff.....

BTW your sump is way too clean. Where is the cord octopus?
Are you planning on running a controller? Something in a hand-me-down version from your smaller tank?

Daniel. :wavehand:

Hey Mat just wanna say your setup is sick, this is definitely a dream tank for all reef keepers, keep up the good work[emoji108]can't wait to see the grand finale

We are working on very similar set ups...similar sized tanks, similar sumps.

I am looking at the RU-8 It's the same skimmer you have except the pump is external.

Do you think its a good choice?

EDIT: My Leds are white only.....in the rim of the stand.... I could not figure out what to do with water proofing underneath and just started with stock.....now I want you stop the build, back up and do what you did. My plumbing is going to be 100x more boring than yours. I'm afraid to even ask what your doing with the control panel.

After seeing this....I might be embarrassed to even post my build thread. I hate you man......lololol

Personally I am not a big equipment guy and run my tanks very lean on equipment but seeing your setup makes me think twice...GREAT job with everything thus far, can't wait to see it all come together!!
