Maui recommendations?

Anyone with any pointers on who to go with and which dives to take for newly cert divers. We've got a handful of dives under our belts. Going to Maui this august.

Inside the crater is indeed a good dive, and it's also a good beginners dive due to lack of current. The back side is a fascinating dive, but more of an advanced dive due to being a sheer wall exposed to open ocean waves and currents. It's been quite while since I've been there, so not sure what dive operations are around these days.

Kihei is a great beach dive, it is a preserve so there is an abundance of life. The entry is a bit slippery but once you are in it is great. Molokini is good snorkeling in the crater, the ocean side is a 300 foot wall so it requires care. Check out octopusreef.com if you want a great guided tour from an experienced diver and conservationist.

aloha i actually live in maui and have been many places for snorkeling i havent gotten around to getting my dive cert yet but i know some people that have. In my oppinion the best places to snorkel is a place called "the aquarium" it is down past makena and is made out of many lava pools that you can snorkel around with tons of fish ( not much coral though) molokini crater is also excelent for both diving and snorkeling the visibility is usually around 150+ feet if you go there spend a little extra money and book a charter that gets there as early in the day as possible other wise many of the larger fish and sting rays are gone. another very famous place to scuba in maui is a place called the cathederals which is a very large underwater lava formation that somewhat resembeles a cathlic cathederal. also in wilea there is ulua beach which is another famous dive site that is accessable right off of the beach you can rent equipment very cheaply from a place called maui dive shop ( they book dives too) you should pick up a book called maui reveled it is the best guide book you can possible get for maui. one piece of advise though if you go to hana dont go on private land the locals hate it and when you come in contact with one it will ruin your day!!! good luck and have fun

ohh i also forgot black rock and honolua bay on the west side are great places to dive as well. there are lots of night dives you can go to off of black rock. and for sea turtles the best place is in wilea just dont get near the sea turtles if you touch one or even agrevate it which is a very loose term you can get 1 year in jail and a 30000 dollar fine so enjoy from a safe distance

Wow, great advice everyone. We're actually going to Maui twice in the next 12 months. First time we'll be in Kaanapali and second in Kihei. I'll try to squeeze in as much as I can.

Shopping for underwater housing for camera, so I'll post as many pics as I can!

You will be amazed at the cost of an underwater camera housing! If this is your first foray into underwater photography you might get one of the inexpensive underwater cameras available most anywhere. We went snorkeling at Molokini 2 years ago. I was cruising along looking straight down and bumped into something with my head I looked up into the face of an Eagle Ray, startled I let out a sceam thru my snorkel. I looked over to be sure my 13 y/o daughter was still with me wanting to point oout the Ray, she however was already half way back to the boat swimming like one of those cartoon characters practically on top of the water. Peed my wetsuit laughing!

I second inner crater of Molokini for an easy dive. Also, just a beach dive can be loads of fun - turtles, octopus, shark - just find a good guide to take you out, someone who knows the area. I met up with a guy who took me out on some scooter dives right off the beach. Covered tons of ground on those things, and if we saw something interesting, could just ditch the scooters and swim around.

My Son and I were in Maui this past December. Cannot say enough about our experience with Lahaina Divers. We found them to be first rate and extremely helpful. These were our first blue water dives. In retrospect, we regreted not doing a beach dive at Black Rock, since we stayed just done the beach from it. Did snorkle it, and saw some turtles.

ENJOY !!!! You'll love it.

I went snorkeling Molokini a few years back and it was absolutlely stunning. The guides actually told me that during certain times of the year, on dive trips to the backside of the crater, you can hear the whales singing off in the distance.

+1

the whales are there from about nov till march and you can hear them all over the place all you have to do is stop breathing and clear your ears of any air. however there wont be any around in august.

Black rock is really nice, tons of corals and a good variety of fish, the only problem is there are tons of snorkelers.

makena landing(tiger woods lives their), turtle town, ulua beach, polo beach, molokini, and most of all wailea point. i saw a whitetipe and a spotted eagle ray at wailea point

Hey, not to take away the thread, but that inner crater thing (easy snorkle one?) in Molokini, would you be able to hear the whales around Thanksgiving time in November?

I am going on a hawwaiian cruise in july, and we allreadey booked a snorkaling trip to molikini crater. I cant wait.Is it true that the water is crystal clear there? Is it possable to swim with any of the green sea turtles? What kinds of coral are located there?
