maxi-jet mods on wave makers

Ok.. Dont know if this is a question or something I am learning. I have tried the mod kits on 2 different wave makers 1. red sea 2. natural wave. one type of mod kit failed very bad arter a few starts. The other one I am using the kit is. shure flow by algae free.. This one is working very well becuse the propeller slides into the shaft. The old one I tried the propeller had a teat that butted up against the shaft in a indention. Has anyone else done this????

I have 3 of the sureflow mods, been running them off the wavemaker part of my ReefKeeper since Xmas, all three are still running great, and never notice any noise at start up.

you're telling me you don't hear any start-up noise with the sureflow moded pumps on the wavemaker??

If that is directed towards me, then yes that is what I am saying. Once in a blue moon I may hear something, but most of the time, nothing.

Hmm, Mine always makes a clanking noise when restarted. but its not the sureflow kit. think i need to try that kit

I'm in the same boat as Todd. Been running 4 MJs with Sure-Flow mods on a Reef Fanatic Wave Creator since November and haven't had a single start-up issue or noise problem.

that's all i needed to hear! I just placed an order for 2 to use with my natural wave kit with the 3 mj's that sat in a box new and unopened. Was a very generous gift from an RC'er.

I had mine on a wave maker (sureflo & modded), and hated it. It's an AC pump, so you'll never know which direction it'll spin when it starts. When it's slightly dirty, it has a tendency to spin in reverse for me.

I would use it but not on a wave maker.

I tried eco mods, gs2's, and sureflo's on different wavemaker/timer combos. They were all good for a while, but none lasted more then six months (six mods in all on different tanks). The lower flow mods (smaller props) took less damage and made less noise. Propellor wear was the most common misshap and twice the shaft drilled right through the pump. Plus the occasional clickety-clack.

Sureflo was quietest and most sturdy. GS2 was the most dramatic (most flow). Eventually I switched to one GS2 on a seio pump controller for a pulsing gyre type effect. Great combo! Quiet, no broken props/pumps, critters were happy, and less detritus. The changing velocity of the laminar flow causes much more turbulance than one would expect. Also, I really love the feed mode which shuts the pump down and restarts automatically. Worthy investment!

If you have a pressure rated pump why not go with a SCWD??? No need for wavemaker controllers or any additional pumps. Mine has been working great and my LPS & fish love it.

I was thinking of all the mods stated above but given that i live in SoCal...electric is pretty expensive down here so saving energy any way, shape, and form is a must.
