maxima clam and HA on shell

Does anyone else ever witness ha growing on their maxima clam shells? I take much time to insure that the excess nutrients in my tank are at an absolutely minimum and have no ha anywhere else's in the tank but for some reason it grows rapidly on my maxima shell. I am wondering if it is because clams use nitrate as a source of nourishment and that there is a concentration of it on the shell or at least being sucked in my the clam allowing the patch to grow. ANyway, it is unsightly and I need to figure out how to kill it off without taking the clam out at the same time.

Try taking a wire brush to the shell right before a water change. Just secure the clam and scrub away.
