maxima colors

Very good question, though it is not just maximas, it is this way with all clams. Through the glass my maxima looks black and baby blue (still beautiful), but looking top down, it has a bright green rim around it. Wish I could see the green through the glass

I am sure the glass acts as a filter. Most websites take pictures of the clams they have for sale looking down and not through the glass.

it the way the light is reflected back at you.looking from the front you only see part of the light, from the top you see all of the light

Polarization of the pigments relative to the zooxanthellae. If you gave a clam really really bright light from the side of the tank after a while you would notice the same colors from the side.

However, this is why I like Deresa's better than Maximas. Maximas are beautiful from the top but (other than teardrops) not so cool from the side. Deresas are just as cool from the side and a heck of a lot cheaper and more durable IMHO.

Glass tanks have green in them so they filter out some green in the clams. I just set up an acrylic cube and my clams look awsom thru the crystal clear. Just as good as from the top.

My last tank was acrylic and I still noticed the same thing with the clams in that tank. Current tank is Starfire on the front and back (optically clear - no green tint) and there is definitely a loss of color from the side. But as you move up (my tank is 30" deep) and get more above the clams you can see more of the colors.

I agree with TXLewis about the Deresa's being the best clam to view from the side. I do have my Maxima and Crocea angled towards the glass and get pretty good color that way.
