Maxima on sand?

Newbie question:
Can Maxima just be placed on the sand or it has to be on a small flat rock so that it would get attached? In other words: can Maxima thrive unattached?
TIA.

I don't think it will be an issue. Is there a reason you can't stick a small rock or piece of tile under it in the sand?

Maxima are almost never found on the sound in the wild. Almost. But this may be because it is so small that it wouldn't be able to stay upright without attaching itself to something in the ocean.

People do sometimes keep maxima on the sand in captivity. But as crvz mentioned, you could place a small rock underneath it. This helps prevent the clam from being attacked by something beneath it (like certain snails).

My little maxima would not stay on the rocks. It wouldn't attach itself either for 2 days.

So, I find it today, on the sand, attached. I'm leaving it there because that is the second time he has landed on the sand.

I have a teardrop Maxima that I have had for 2 years. It is on the sand and has been for 2 years. I tried to put it on a clam shell and a rock under the sand when I got it and it just climbed off and onto the sand. It has grown at least 1-1/2" since I've had it and always shows new shell growth. It must be happy on the sand:)

Crocea seem to prefer rocks (as they can bore deeply into the rock for better protection from predators, they generally don't get as big as Maximas and the other Tridacnids). I have a small Crocea that's been boring into the live rock it's attached to for the last year and a half.

The Maximas can be happy on the sand or on the rocks. Just let it pick it's own place and leave it.
