if you have good mantle extension, if it gapes or not, depending if its a croacia, they tend to gape......if it has good light reflexes..meaning does it cloe up relly quick when you wave your hand or a fish swims by it.......other than that its hard to say, they can drop dead with out showing many signs of illnes at the drop of a hat........

If you have good mantle extension, good reflexs when light is blocked out suddenly and new shell growth is a sign of a happy clam. Not getting those three things then your clam is going to go down hill fast!!!
In a tank that small it will require fairly regular feedings even if its over three inches in size. This is best accomplsihed in a small bowl with enough phyto to make the water greenish tinted. When the water is clear again your good to go and can add back to the main tank. Do QT this thing as Pyrmid snails are tough to spot and once they are in the main tank its all but impossible to get rid of them. Make it a habit of checking your clam thoroughly on a weekly basis for such pest. They can do a clam in, in a heart beat. Keep you Ca levels up on the high side as well. This is even more important as it gets larger as they can be quiet the calcium hogs and will quickly deplete this from a system as small as your. Research and then do some more research before buying. If its a Crocea or Maxima...halides are by far and away best but in a shallow tank with lots of PC or VHO they can do okay, the colors just wont be as intense as they could be. These are gorgous creatures and can be very addicting, so you have been warned;LOL.
