Maximum Size of Yellow Fiji Leathers"?

Hi Guys:

I'm kind of curious- I've had the "standard" gold-colored Sarcophytons before, and I know they get huge!

Do the so-called "Yellow Fiji" variety or the "Neon Green" variety attain smaller maximum sizes? Are they simply color morphs of the same Sarcophyton species (elegans or otherwise), or are either of these corals different species of Sarcophyton altogether?

Also, has anyone maintained multiple specimens of Sarcophyton in the same tank as the exclusive coral resident (ie; a mon-specific system)? I'm thinking of doing this with just the so-called "Yellow Fiji" variety, and I'd like to hear from you/see your tanks.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Scott

The Fiji yellow leathers (i'm thinking they're S. Elegans...) can get freakin HUGE!! ;) some guy..forget the name of course...had one for a long time...it was either 9 or 19, cant remember, but i know it had a 9 haha... anyways, the coral took up like over half (no joke) of a 90g tank. So if you keep it healthy and take care of it....it's gonna get huge..

And same with the regular toadstools (which is what i'm guessing you had when you say "standard" gold colored one...). They'll get huge. I've got all 3....Fiji yellow, "regular" gold/brown/tan (depending on who's eyes you use haha) and i've also got the bright neon green toadstool...all 3 have grown very fast and the longest i've had any of them is like 10 months, and the shortest being like 4 months. I'm actually starting to get worried that my fiji yellow is gonna be too big for my 40 breeder within another year or 2...specially since i'm upgrading to t5's (just ordered today :) ) and they like lots of light.

Anyways, i'm just kinda rambling on there...the end haha

Awesome feedback...Thanks!

I've been kind of agonizing over which species I want to use in my tank, so this is quite helpful!

Thanks again!

yup, no prob ;) If this is for your 152, i'd get the fiji yellow...not like it matters if it gets huge in that big of a tank, and of those 2, its the better looking one. You could go w/the neon green, but aparently those grow much slower...normally.. A guy that came over to see my tank yesterday who's got them was very surprised to see that mine had grown so much in such little time...specially since i really dont do anything to my tank really haha.

I agree..The Yellow is very attractive. My goal was to have several specimens, though, and seeing how large this species gets, it may not be such a great idea!

More thinking...More thinking....

Thanks!

ya, thats kinda what i was doing w/my 40 breeder...but now i realize that its way to small for that many different leathers....in 2 years, i wont have room for anything because of them...i wont frag them though, i'd rather just trade them or buy a bigger tank to keep them...i couldnt cut up something that big :)

oh monti, leathers really dont eat anything. At least i've got like 4 or 5 different types, and i feed absolutely nothing (other than mysis/plankton/flake for my fish) to my tank and the leathers all grow really fast for me. I'm convinced that they're perfectly fine w/just light, and personally, i dont think they can eat anything even if you give it to them...that is untill i see someone actually do it or show some sort of research/whatever to show that they did eat food :)

I think Both sarcrophyton species can attain the same size, approx. I have seen pictures in a book of a person who had a sarc in his tank for over 15 years. At the time of taking it out it weighed 250 lbs and took 2-3 people to lift it out of the tank.
