Maxspect LED owners!!!

i think u order the led kit upgrade right ? how is the performance ? how long do u plan to acclimate the corals before turning on the 30W?

My own install photos, with some pictures of the latest batch coming out of FinsReef.

Currently I have the following lighting schedule.

Blues ON - 10:30am
Whites ON - 11:30am
Whites OFF - 9:30pm
Blues OFF - 10:30pm

30w's not currently being used until everything is acclimated to the new fixtures.

If you're doing mostly or all SPS and clams, the lenses wouldn't be a bad idea. If you're doing mostly LPS or soft corals, I wouldn't worry about it.

I'll probably wait about a month before turning on the 30w's at all. But then again, I'm going from a fairly weak PC setup to a fairly strong LED setup. So I have a greater difference for them to acclimate to.

thanks for that one ..... my corals got browned out and lost the blue colour because of i never acclimate

After What seemed like weeks of research into different lights I have decided on these but dunno what options and what power and how to set them up over my tank. it is 84 wide 48 deep and 36 tall. I it will be mostly LPS and soft but I would like clams and maybe a few sps. And I like that shadowed look around the edges. What fixture, how many, and in what configuration. I was thinking 3 260s hanging front to back. like I I I instead of -- -- --. And then the optics kit because it is 36 deep.

anything?

My tank is 72x25x36 and I was told to go with 2 of those (or 4 of the shorter ones) side to side...so I think the config you've chosen for your tank makes sense.

I was told I should use the lenses as well. The thing is...it's just still too much money, and not enough proven long-term durability and growth, IMO. The option is that or fix my 4x250 HQI fixture. It probably would pay for itself in relatively short order, given that I need to replace parts of my ballast and by four new bulbs, at a minimum, but still...it would be over $2K to go LED and I don't KNOW that the long-term results will be good, or that the fixture itself won't have issues that need expensive repairs as well.

DIY is an attractive option, but none of the ones I've seen in any detail have the optics or the 30W LEDs which I think are both needed for deep tank penetration...and I'm not sure I feel like doing the required work to design it myself. Then again the DIY thread is about a billion pages so I very likely could have missed some stuff in there...

Your tank is pretty big but so I can't tell you from my personal experience but I think you would be able to do it with the lights mentioned as long as you keep them up from the water a little to get more spread.
With your depth you will find things like morphs will not go above the 2/3 mark. At 24" the morphs hide in shadow under the 2x 160w g2's I have been running for nearly a year now.
PS. I assume you mean 3x160w's.

you think 3 160w's will be enough to light my tank? There is just so many options I don't want to over spend and have too much power. and I don't want to underspend and then have to upgrade because its not powerful enough. If I can get the fixture right, 160,170 or 230, then if I need more light I can just buy another one. But if it just isn't strong enough to penetrate then I will have to upgrade. Oh and then do I pick Cree or Semiled?
p.s. what are morphs?

Just wondering what kind of temp readings you guys are seeing from your LED units. Mine are under a canopy, so I want to make sure not to get them overheated, and am seeing about 46C when running without the 30w LED's.

My 230W is also inside a canopy And it's temp went up to 42C with everything on (include 4x30W) but I had a pc fan pulling air out from inside the canopy. I recently switched the fan and have air blowing on the back side of the LED unit and its temp never went higher than 35C. I believe many of the tests done on Maxspect did not exceed 50C. So if you can keep it below 50C, you will be okay.

Yeah, I think I'm going to add more venting to the canopy. The backside is all open, but I'll probably add some kind of fan as well. I've got a couple very high flow 12v 120mm squirrel cage fans I can put in no problem. I'm pretty sure I've got a 12v brick laying around here somewhere.

Hi there. I messed up my conversion to metric. Your tank is huge.
4x 230s sounds like a better option. 6x 160 in === configuration would be even better and allow more control.
IMO a DIY build is going to suit your tank size much better.
Morphs are http://www.australiancoralfarms.com.au/waynes-blog/2010/7/23/fluro-red-morphs/. Not sure what you guys call them but it seems to get used as a genral term for many different types in Aus.
Have you got a more specific list of stuff you would like to keep? The clams might need the optics if kept on the bottom.

I would love to do a DIY but the diy led thread is HUGE, I have no idea where I would start. I also don't have alot of electrical knowledge either so I would be worried of spending all this money on all the parts, just to screw it up.

There are a few kits you can buy to simplify things. Contact a supplier and tell them what you are trying to do.
Otherwise the 160s are a good simple unit for the price.

Any chance you can share a couple of photos on how you put some additional ventilation to bring down the ambient temp of the Maxspect LED assembly, please?

I cut an opening at the top of my canopy and made a panel consists of two pc fans. Originally I was pulling warm air from inside the canopy but I found out by flipping the panel and pushing room air over the LED fixture, I was able to run the LED almost 7C cooler

I used to run 2x39W T5 actinic (front) to add more blue to the 230W.

Because I have a 92g corner tank and my 230W can't quite reach the corners of my tank plus I wanted a little more blue to the color so I recently replaced my T5 with a DIY 24x3W LED strip. The two pc fans pushing air into the canopy proves to able to keep both units running cool.
