I'm pretty sure most of the G2 units are having the same issues. Mine included.
Wait until your ballast blows up and you get told you can buy a new one but there wont be any warranty on the purchase.

At the end of the day I've had a couple of years use out of my fixtures. I was happy with them up until now.

This is quite interesting, I had not noticed until you pointed it out. My G2-160 is about 18 months old, about 2/3rds have the black markings to varying degrees, the rest are fine. Putting a white sheet of paper a few inches from the fixture, the light intensity is quite diminished from the blackened ones compared to the clear ones. I'd not noticed significant adverse reaction from the corals, but I had also added a couple of PAR30 supplemental bulbs that probably masked the decreased PAR from the Maxspect.

I was planning to slowly replace the LED's with high-powered Cree's anyway, so I'm OK with not getting more than 2-3 years out of the SemiLED's. But is this a symptom of excessive heat or other design that would prematurely affect replacement LED's?
 
I'm waiting for some time to take my fixture to rapid led. Hoping to get them to make up some replacement leds that clip in like the semis. What they currently have don't fit

Mine only ever gets up around the 40c mark with all Leds on. My guess would be too little thermal paste combined with dodgy components.

If you run the unit without the cover the edges actually get hotter. The cover forces air over the entire heatsink.
 
Its incredibly dissapointing to find that other people with G2 units are experiencing the same problem. This is a clear manufacturing fault and should be covered by warranty :debi:. Im going to keep investigating what they are prepared to do. This is not good for Maxspect.

So has anyone been able to figure out which adapters are the right fit and a place to order them?

I'm OK with soldering them onto replacement Cree's, but would rather solder new adapters, and keep the existing adapters on the Semileds as backups. Also easier to play mix-and-match with different color combinations this way.
 
So I just spent some time at rapid led researching the connectors. He doesn't have anything that small but is looking into it. While I was there in figured I might as well change out my violet leds that were on their last legs.

The connector broken off when trying to remove it. They all seemed brittle from possible over heating. Note this was only the violets nothing else. It was a pia to remove. Had to soder right to the board! But worked out ok

The rest we left the connections alone and resodered new leds. I put in a green and red just to see how it looks. I also moved a few blues to the white channel and vise versa but unplugging the connectors.

I'll give this some time then decide what I want to do with my other fixture

that's with two new semi violets and single cree green and red/orange led. the red is really strong as you can see by the rock work. Not sure if I like it or not. Only time will tell. I'll swap out the other side in the coming weeks.

I'm pretty sure they're all 3w LEDs, although they may be driven at different currents. Maybe an email to Eric at fishstreet?
Just be carefull you don't damage the ballast.

After my recent G2 160 failure (2years old) I was told ,by Eric, that maxspect have stopped using the G2 ballasts.
I'm not too annoyed about the ballast losing a channel after 2 years. My gripe lies with the lack of support for this problem. It's just not good enough to say " we changed the design, so too bad. No warranty on parts for you!!".

I'm now looking into retrofitting better ballasts into the lights at the same time as changing out the leds.

Shame on you Maxspect for not offering acceptable after sales support for a product that's only 2 years old.

i like the white with the blue, but four might be too many. i'll cut it down to two another day.
 
If anyone using 60 watt Maxspect Mazarra P-Series MZ-P01 LED Module?

Also, I saw a negative review about the rail mounting system it uses. Anyone else have problems with it?

Finally, would two of these be suitable for a 75 mixed reef tank with lots of SPS?

Im using them. I have 3 over my 75g. 2 wasnt enough light for me. Some dark spots. I didnt have problems with the rail system at all. Easy to put together. Some parts are a lil flimsy. If your going to have alot of sps then a minimum of 3 will be needed.

You will be pushing with one unit. The 100* optics give a 24x24 spread. I would go with 2. And your tank is 24" deep so you will probably need the 70* optics to penetrate deeper.
