Maxspect LED VS Key Aquarium LED

I was just reading up on both the Key Led and Maxspect. According to the fish-street site, you can have your color temperature custom made (item 11 on the features list on the K series), and it sounds like the Key leds have a better cooling system, but it doesn't say anything about the operating temperature. I just email Eric at fish-street requesting more info.

I would love an update on what you found out about these lights. The website states that they run at about a 12K look. Do you know if there is any way to change this to more of a 20K? Thanks.

Maxspect just released about 13 new color options for thier fixture and in a week or so they will also be selling a kit to add optical reflectors. I currently own a maxspect and have been happy with it and think once I get this optic kit it will make this fixture pretty amazing.

Here is a link to the Maxspect Owners thread on here http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1817995&page=36 You can see page 36 has info about the new colors and page 35 shows the optics.

Bumping this thread!

Has anyone taken the plunge yet and ordered a KEY Led ramp?

They have recently released a K2 version that includes a timer for the different lights. As I see it, this was one of the major drawbacks of the ramp before compared to the Maxspect ramp. Judging by the information and comparison with Maxspect on Fish-Street this now actually seems to be an alternative! Would be nice to hear what all of you that have more experience with LED:s than I do have to say. A KEY LED ramp with Cree lights compared to a Maxspect Cree ramp, is Maxspect really worth the price premium?!

I dont own the unit but as a current LED user a few things do jump out at me. First, the units lack optics but are available with the much sought after cree LED's in semi dense clusters, this leads me to believe the units would work best on 20" or less tank for SPS. I would seriously consider the 24" slim unit for my 40 breeder frag/fish quarantine tank. My experience with LEDS is based on my use as a consumer of Aqua illumination LEDs so I can tell you I see a few immediate drawbacks to these units.

First, they are made in china so any failures might result in large wait times to get resolved. Secondly, These Fixtures have no dimming capacity which I find dimming very useful given the power LEDS have and first time users have cooked even their most resilient light soaking sps. **I would like to note they have 4 controllable LEDS banks which isnt as useful as dimming but can help you during your light acclimation period.** finally those chasis look fairly cheap and I would reccomend using this light but maybe with a glass cover to prevent salt creep until the units durability is apparent.

Those are just a few things that jump out at me as I look at these Key LED units. I would really be interested in getting to try one of these units and doing a more comprehensive evaluation so If I do pick up a unit I will be sure to post for you guys.So while there are some drawbacks for the price it is a risk I personally find exceptable. I ,again this is a personal bias, would pick up any 3w cree based chip LED fixture like this over any t5 or MH setup on the market.
