Just having fun
This years may meeting is scheduled to be held at the home of Jerrod and Kristin young. They are also the owners of Filtered aquatics. The third Saturday is the 21st which is memorial day weekend. We may need to move the date by a week either way. Jerrod please chime in here and give your address so everyone will know how to get there. Thanks

I will ask then that we move it back a week to May 28

The theme is Backyard BBQ so bring appropriate fixins!

I will have a general discussion on the importance of water flow in a reef tank.

I'm really looking forward to this topic. I have been struggling with keeping my LPS and SPS coral surviving. I suspected it was flow, so i added two more wave maker power heads. Not to jump the gun here, but i have a 90 gal tank. What size and how many power heads should I have approx? Also, is there a guideline on how to set up the direction that makes sense?

I think you have it backwards. Memorial day 2011 is May 30th, so you just moved the meeting to Memorial day weekend...

Oops. I guess I should have confirmed that date before I posted it. :lmao: thanks jayelblock for pointing this out.

And aquasump. You will want as much flow as possible in a tank somewhere around 40-50x tank volume should suffice. So in a 90 I would want somewhere around 4000-4500 gph flow rate. All of this should be covered at the next meeting

Nick,my tank is just a little larger than yours.I run 3 K4s at 1200gph and my return is a mag 18 pump at 1800gph.Take to total of all your pumps and divide them by your water volume in your display. That number will be your turnover rate.So all pumps add up to 5400 and divide that by the tank size of 110 and you get a little over 49.This tells me that I have a 49x turnover rate in my display.I did not add in the pumps in my sump like the skimmer and an extra power head that moves the macro.

That’s some good information. I thought I could get away with two MP40’S on my 300 but realized pretty fast that I wasn’t getting the job done. So I added a MP60. All I can say is it made a big difference. Just not sure how you would figure out what my turnover rate would be due to their random circulation…

Wouldn’t you also have to figure in head pressure. The return pump(depending on brand) gph can change drastically due to the distance horizontally and vertically(mainly) its pushing the water. It could be rated at 1800 gph and you are only getting 800 when it’s all said and done… I personally bought a return pump rated to large for my overflow. This way I could get maximum flow using a ball valve and not overwork my return pump.

So Jarrod and all, I have a 900 in my sump (which probably is putting out much lower presure once it gets to the display tank), a K4 (1200 GPH), and two wave makers (1- K3 900 and 1 K2 600). So that would be 3,600 / divided by 90 would be 40. I have mostly soft and LPS. is that enough? or should I upgrade my K2 to another K3 or K4?

Normally by your tank size but the only real problem I have with that is if you have a 90 gallon display but the chances of you having 90 actual gallons are slim to nil.As far as the head loss goes there is a calculator on the main page here on RC.I think your fine as far as flow goes for lps and softies and even some sps.

well, everything else aside, i plan on attending and will be bringing some pasta salad!! hope to see everybody there for not attending the last couple meetings. Def a tank worth seeing, a full grown out SPS system

Anyway back to what we were originally talking about

Anyway back to what we were originally talking about

So I guess we are back to May 21st then.

Here is a corrected map link
Just click on the directions tab then enter your starting address

Just reminding everyone that we do live out in the boonies its about a 35 minute drive from Midtown Tulsa and around a 45 minute drive from Broken Arrow. We have always had a good time in the past and will do our best to make sure it is again this year so it should be worth the drive. We plan on bringing lots of raffle items from the shop. Also it is a backyard BBQ so if you have a comfortable lawn chair be sure to bring it out.

In the past we have done food list so that we can have an idea of whos bringing what. It would be a good idea to start one of those here.

I'll start

Grilling Hamburgers and hotdogs - Young Family
Refreshments (beer, soda, water) - ?
Side items (I know there are some great cooks in OMAS) - Travis_Pasta Salad
Desserts - ?

Thanks Travis, Jason, and Nick for posting up that your coming hopefully this weather wont last through May so we can have a nice outdoor BBQ.

My "I'm coming" post got deleted, but count me and my wife in, and we will bring a couple of dessert dishes. :)

Also... Can you recheck that google maps link? I was trying to show my wife where it was, and it pulled up Coffeyville Kansas.
