May Meeting

So April is almost gone and May is right around the corner. Tentative date and time for May meeting is Sunday May 22nd at 2 pm. Any thoughts from the club members?

May be a stupid question but are the meetings always at the coral reef or will this one be some where else?

I second both of those posts, I am free and clear the 22nd, but have never been to a meeting so would not know where to go :)

As pnavarro170 said the meetings are always held at different locations. At anytime that any member feels like it they can offer up their place to host a meeting. It is nice to have saltwater to stare at but it is not a must. We do however try to shoot for the third Sunday of the month, around 2 to 3 pm. That is always flexible if some other date works for more people. fn1 it would be nice to see you and Mrs. fn1 at more meetings, it was nice to meet both of you at the last meeting. Chaka I do look forward to having you attend meetings as well as take part here on the forum. It is always nice when we have new people take part.

Most meetings are a bit more official than the last one was, ( I think Pedro was disappointed because the last one was not so official) but they don't always have to be, even though it was an official meeting it just didn't have any business discussed. It is nice just to get together and shoot the bull and have fun from time to time and not have the official discussion during the meeting. The bylaws state that we have to have one official meeting a year and that meeting already took place for this year, so we are good .

Come on now all you old members lets come up with some kind of presentation or a discussion on something for this meeting. Or even any of you new people that have been attending or plan to attend. We are always open for suggestions for things to discuss or do during the meetings.

Audrey the date and time sounds great to me, I do hope it works for the majority. Oh by the way, welcome back.

i wasnt dissapointed for myself for no official business. i was a tad for the new people. just so they walked away with more and came back to more meetings, and took part. i have a great time with everyone and look forward to them with or without official meeting practices. also the saltwater to stare at is a personal preferance and of course we dont need one to have a meeting.

Pedro, thank you for your concern about the new members taking part in a more official meeting, that means a lot. I did personally walk around and talk with every new person at the last meeting and explain to them that not all meetings are like this one and explained to them that we do indeed conduct more official meetings most of the time. All in all I believe we had a good meeting. Now lets all put our heads together and plan a better next meeting. Any thoughts or ideas, anyone?

I think we will see the new people come back for sure.
Again, thanks for your concern.

first we have to come up with a place to have the meeting, cough cough Pedro cough cough. Who will be willing to host it,and any ideas on what to do a presentation?

I am not sure what you all have talked about in the past. I personally am looking for more advise on SPS care and feeding (like culturing phytoplankton). I have some things to offer, not to in-depth, but have done DIY LED setups and wiring. I try to read a lot of information on reefing (wife hates it), but really without knowing what you all have discussed in the past I am shooting in the dark.

Personal topics I would like to explore (don't want to be selfish just throwing ideas out there):

  • SPS care, feeding, and fragging
  • Reef lighting (T5, MH, LED [only have experience in the LEDs, minimal T5])
  • FLOW*
  • Algae scrubbers
  • Copepod breeding**
  • Setting up a productive refugium

*I believe a HUGE important part of fish and coral health.
** I hear they are more effective at algae and debris removal than any snail or crab could be

These are just suggestions, just trying to get the topics rolling.

Chaka, very interesting! I do believe if you would like to discuss any of these topics at a meeting they would all be more than helpful. I do know that Chuy is wanting to do a DIY LED fixture for his tank. I think that would be a great topic for a meeting.
You will never be looked at as being selfish for sharing ideas with all of us. Maybe if you didn't share you would be. I look forward to meeting you and hearing some of your ideas.

Senor Sparks!

I was going to call you tomorrow...was going to see if you sell frags. That is what another post said. I work here at station 5 like 6-7 blocks away from you place.

I can talk about LEDs if anyone is interested. I have done a setup with meanwells/crees in series and next setup will be with only 2 drivers running the LEDs in parallel. I can bring my rig if you all want to see it (might be letting it go soon with new 96 led setup).

P.S. .....don't get to excited about the beard...completely shaved...but I do have long hair (for a male that is).

Pedro i wish yours was think that! Maybe one day. lol Jeremy give me a call and come on by tomorrow and i can talk to you blue in the face about SPS! I am bailing to Silver City at 4:30 to listen to Howie Morales speech on economic downturn. :)

Location... umm... well having it at my place has been ok'd. I just had to promise all the moving boxes will be gone. If another location is agreed on my home is open for future meets. I'll just need more chairs....

just had a good idea, we can do a how to build a stand for a frag tank. IF ONLY WE HAD ONE TO DO !!!! hahaha or how to plumb a club frag tank. or how to WELL YOU GET THE DRIFT.

I just got back form Andy's house and all we need is a table saw or an angle saw to start the stand. If any of you have a one of these saws that we can borrow, that would help the making of the stand go faster. Also, if we get the saws we need for the stand build. Then we can do a how to plumb a tank demonstration.

Also, are we all ok with having the meeting on the date projected in Andy's house? this will give all of the club members a physical location on where the frag tank will be. We also get a chance to look at some amaizing saltwater in a tank.

Erik, what do you need the table saw for? What do you call an angle saw? I have a good circular saw that I can bring. I built my stand with the use of my circular saw, jig saw and mitre box with back saw. Please let me know if any of these tools are needed. I can also bring pneumatic nail or staple guns if needed, an air compressor would be required to run them of course.
This sounds like a good thing to work on during the meeting if Andy is ok with it.
