Maybe we could have a chalice grow out contest.

Hey everybody,
I hope your tanks are all doing great. I was thinking it might be fun to have a grow out contest start at our next meeting? Potentially we could agree/purchess a large affordable cool chalice colony, or a bunch of the same healed frags , from a vendor. And do another grow out contest. I think a chalice species would be a fun contest because their is so much debate on the best over all care and husbandry for the coral. Such as t5vs mh vs led and weather or not feeding influences the growth rate noticeably and not to forget placement. I'm sure Will from Aqua SD would hook up us up with a fun colony or as many frags as we figured we would need, or maybe a club member has a colony they could part with for the contest at a good price. Maybe we could all chip in $10-15$ and get something nice. Anyhow just a thought and this post is simply to see if anybody else thinks that would be a fun contest or your opinion on what would be a good grow out contest for us in the future.
Thanks

That's a good point it would be easy to measure the growth,by the number of new eyes. Also it's fun to see how different they can look in different tank conditions.

I've got two chalices that would be perfect that I'm going to sell along with other frags. But they maybe more than what the club would want to pay. One thing about fragging chalices for a good survival rate is the bigger the better. I knew the club lost a lot of frags with the chalices bought from Tom. I guess we tried to get as many cuts as possible but it just didn't work out. Anyways, here are the two that I was talking about. Large pieces about 4x3" minimum for both. Both remind me of the convict patterns.

I've got a Baseball size of Miami Hurricane which we have wacked for the raffle in the past. I try not to make money off the club so with that said I can see donating more than enough frags for the grow out contest. I would gladly except a frag or two if someone wanted to donate me. If not i will still donate the needed frags for the grow out. Someone will simply need to bring the band saw over and help me wack it up.

last time we did it John did an exceptional job of cutting while I mounted.

Hint Hint!

Thanks for the shout out but it wasn't me. I came late to the party! :) Was it Nick?

I do have the saw and can come over to your place almost anytime. For fragging supplies, I've got glue and about 20 flat disks. What else do we need?

I'd also love to see your tank aptasia free!! You must have thousands of Berghia hiding somewhere!

I think the Miami chalice is strongly represented in the club already. Imo, it would be better to introduce something new that people are more likely to keep and propagate after the contest is over. Just my 2 centa

I agree from what I know most of the members have the Miami hurricane chalice. I spoke to Will from Aqua SD and he said that he could supply the frags already healed for a very fair price. He has some cut up Aussie chalice frags that are healed and cost from $5-$20 depending on what chalice everybody wanted to choose. The 5$ Chalices are wild Aussie and green speckled. 10- 15 $ options are pink planther and some red hot wild chalice. He can send me pics soon if anybody wanted to go that route. Just one more option depending on what people think would be fun.

I have some nice chalices I recently received, but they are all small frags at this point, they'd have to grow a lot before they could be touched. They came from Lam at Exclusive Corals out in Arizona, and they weren't cheap, haha.
