maze brain growth?

Hello, I just got a long thin rounded frag of a maze brain coral and I am not sure how I should mount it?

do I need to mount the side flush with other rock so that it can encrust? Or can I just toss it on the sand facing the lights and it will form its own skeleton?

I highly recommend that you mount it to something. It will be able to encrust on its own, but theres no way IME/IMO that it will grow nearly as fast or be in as good of health if you leave it in sand. They can get knocked over by other critters, get detrius stuck, etc.

Also, they can encrust to whatever, but will do it better and faster if mounted to a rock.
