You can do two if the system is large enough. The minimum recommended tank size for one is 50, mostly so they can run and flash. I've heard of people doing two males in a 125 but I don't know if you could do two in a smaller system. Having a female or another male will help him retain his color to really "POP."
I have two male Carpenters and 3 juvi/females in a 190 without the first sign of aggression between the two males. The females show more aggression between each other, but nothing beyond minor asserting of authority that you get with any fish. I did aquascape my tank to try to provide 3 different areas and plenty of caves and cover to curb aggression.
