McCulloch's Clownfish

Has anyone kept these fish? I understand they prefer colder water although the seller implies 77-78 degrees would keep them. Any one keeping these now?
Thanks in advance.

kris4647 All info is old it seems. Spoke to LFS guy who said they NEED colder water and he was unable to keep them and this guy is gifted. So I an backing off the big plan to buy one it seems.

I guess my question is has anyone kept these???????
If so what temps can they handle?
I am getting conflicting info on this "colder water" required by these McCullock's clowns
Again TIA

Your lfs guy

Your lfs guy

He is BSing you.

Most of the ones that made it into the US and Canada were captive bred and were already acclimated to warmer temps.

They commanded a very high price tag which is why most people didn't have them.

Ask if they were captive bred or wild caught. That should be your answer. If he says wild caught is pretty much BS.

If he says captive bred its possible. Also the website you checked is a very good breeder in Canada and he def had a pair in a tank probably 76 - 80 degrees.

Thanks readmeli My concern is water temp. I hear from others that this is "cold water" fish and should not be kept in my 77-70 degree tanks. They went on to see they needed water temps of 72ish What temp do you keep um at the shop? And do you think they would make in my system ?

Here's the original story. (Mods I hope this is okay, been gone for a bit).

Here's Live Aquaria's story
http://www.liveaquaria.com/general/general.cfm?general_pagesid=476

Some leaked in to the trade back around the 2008 time period, it would be speculation to say where they came from. Most of that sort end up in Japan. i was offered one for 5k, from a rare fish guru. The grizzled veterans of this forum can even tell you stories of some members here who tried to organize an expedition, boat and all back in the early 2000's to get a few from a "secret atoll" outside the regulated areas.

To answer your other question, yes they are collected in colder waters but who knows how a few generations of CB'ing has changed their needs.

Hope that's written decently, it's been awhile.

Thanks kris I have read the story B4 and I am close to buying one but this water temp thing has me scared. I have a 3 tank system run on one sump and stays about 78. Some time 77 sometimes up to 80 degrees. No chiller sold them all :(.

Well if you read it and plan to make an investment in a very rare fish. Either replicate what Ryan did concerning temp or duplicate the environment they are being kept in currently.

You could also read Melissa's link and read it in its entirety. (Hint: Conditioning and Care from Mr.Kohen's article) or read Melissa's post.

Thanks again kris just nervous I guess :)
Really thanks for your input.
And hey I have a Spawning Harem of 5 Flame Angel that grew up in a reef tank, live in my reef tank now that I have thought about selling or trading for some nice chalice corals. How would I go about letting people know? Needless to say I new to posting here.

I believe u need 50 posts out here in the to get to post in the livestock portion of the marketplace not positive. Errrr You could share stories of your harem of five spawning flame angels. That male must be worn out. I'm sure there are lots who would like to hear about it in the appropriate forum.

Best of luck!

Well looks like I was beaten to the punch! The LiveAquaria McCullock was sold :(...........
Guess Ill have to check with ORA tomorrow. I knew I should not have taken so long to decide but that "cold water" gig through me for a loop.
Lesson learned............ IF YOU WANT IT BUY IT!

Ur a devious mean man.
They are magic!

The Sultan has magic fish too. Clarki's with a pretty tail.

Yeah I know, sorry. I get the attraction to pretty, interesting or even odd. I don't get the attraction to rare, just because its rare.

However, I didn't mean to lessen the attraction for people that are into that sort of thing. I was just trying to explain the fish's behavior. :)

Got one :)

Got one :)
