mechanical filter

I have a 90 gallon bare bottom tank with a sump, but I can never seem to get all the detritus out. I was thinking of using a canister filter to suck more out with out having to do a lot of water changes.
This would only be used for when needed and fully cleaned out when not used to prevent any buildup.
has anyone tried this or know if it will or will not work?

yeah i have the same issues thinking of getting a canister filter with heavy duty circular type filter ..forget the name of that unit but it is suppose to be one of the better ones anyone have a clue to the name ? Got it Ehiem has one and this one is suppose to be the best just very expensive found it at Dr.Fosters

Ocean Clear In-Line Filters

That ocean clear one looks intense, might be more than I could even use but that ehiem looks like a good one too for what I need

I have a magnum filter. The other benefit is that it is very easy to tear down and clean. What I would recommend is to just set up the Magnum from time to time and then just blast your rock and bottom with a maxi-jet 1200 or equivalent. That will kick everything up and the magnum with micron cartridge will pull it all out fast. Since you have a filter sock set up, just keep your return going and the sock will collect whatever goes through your overflow. The Magnum is a great choice for this basic application.

i have used both nu-clear and and ocean clear canister filters they work very well eith many options for carbon or phosban along with the cartridge they are a little pricy but work well i prefer the ocean clear the top screws on it is easier to service a cartridge lasts over a year and can be cleaned there is a 30 micron and a 100 micron option the 30 makes water very clean but slows everything down so if your pump is strong enough to take the added workload id use the 30 micron JUST MY OPINION

the e-heim i thought was too easy to break (using like a vacume) and comes apart easy can be frustrating for doing maintenance i have used one to remove algae and clean my live rock from time to time with some good results JUST MY OPINION

i think i might get the magnum 350 than, its on sale right now at one site and it seems to be what i need, if i could afford the ocean clear one (also need the pump i think) i would get that, but since it will just be for weekly cleanings the magnum will do nicely
Thank you for the suggestions
