Media Reactor vs Solid Media Reactor

I am wanting to start running a solid media like EcoBak for Natural Nitrate and Phosphate reduction. What is the actual difference on how a Media Reactor and a Solid Media Reactor works. The only difference I noticed is the Solid Reactor has some kinda plate in the bottom.....

Oh Yeah,
What is the difference in EcoBak and BRS BioPellet Product

Eco-Bak works, Fact. The other i do not know if it does or not? The reactor is just choice and based on the amount needed to run in your tank. Small amounts can be run fine in BRS reactors but when you get into the larger amounts of EB some are better than others. JMO And I have been using EB with success for almost a year and the other brand has just came out not very long ago so no results to prove if it works or not.

Refresh my memory bill, what reactor are you running. I don't know enough about all this and Chris is asking me questions I am not quote sure how to answer

Red Slime

Red Slime

what is the best reactor and pump for 2ltrs and how do you get rid of the associated red slime?

Who associated red slime with Eco-Bak?, I never had this the whole time I have been using EB. I did have a Diatom/Dino's Outbreak on my sandbed that went away after adding some Chemipure Elite for a short time in the Colonization stage of it getting started with the Bacteria. It does take a long time to become effective in reducing Phosphate/Nitrate but when it's fully colonized it's the only way to go! JMHO

I tried using 1000mL of ecobak in a BRS dual reactor with the standard MJ1200 pump and it doesn't work. For smaller amounts of pellets it might work but I'm not sure. I have a nextreef SMR1 on the way that should be here tomorrow. They are very similar to the MR1 reactors but they have larger fittings I think. If you have a larger pump, the BRS reactor would probably work fine. I think Lindsey is/was running them in a BRS reactor split off his return pump and they tumble just fine.

Bart, the nextreef reactors have several sizes and they have an XL version that I think would probably handle 2L of the pellets but you might want to check. TB Aquatics has them and I'm sure some of the other sponsors do as well.

After 5 years of Vodka dosing (Carbon) with great success and coming up on a year of Eco-Bak use With Great Success, I guess I'm just one of those guy's who pay's attention to his Reef. The Main argument here is IF these certain chain of events happen, Well If you lose power and you do not rinse the reactor B4 resuming use that is you being foolish and not knowing what you are doing. All the things mentioned in his statment could happen in any of the other methods of ULNS types of systems and as long as you are confident you understand the product and it's risks you will IME be fine in using this product or any other method of Carbon Dosing JMHO

Did you switch to Eco-Bak to get away from the hassel of daily dosing? Does your coral look better with Eco-Bak? I am thinking about restarting vodka dosing.

my association is based on the red slime appearing for the first time when i began running the pellets and it has only gotten worse. not an absolute cause and effect, but others seem to be seeing the same with all carbon sources.

has anyone used chemi clean?

Just an update now that I have my new reactor for anyone who may still be interested. I got the Nextreef SMR1 to replace the BRS dual reactor. I was running 1000mL of ecobak pellets using the standard maxijet 1200 and they would not even move let alone tumble. I put all the pellets in the new reactor and they are tumbling perfectly:bounce3:. I am still using the same maxijet pump too.

It has plenty of capacity for at least another 500mL of pellets. 2000mL would probably not have enough room to tumble IMO.

Exactly

Exactly

Yes I did It was starting to be a pain to remember did i dose or did i forget? So with the EB you don't have to remember anything.

So no where close to the 2.6L they claim...

I'm not sure how they measure that, maybe its a liquid capacity measurement or something. My 1L when tumbling is well over halfway full. You might could get 2L in there but definitely not 2.6L and even 2L probably wouldn't have room to tumble.

Bill - do you use any bacteria supplement such as MB7, prodibio or zeo's stuff?

About four years ago, I was trying Ivan's prodibio based carbon dosing method. I actually started out with vodka dosing. After a week of vodka dosing, my green milli brightened up amazingly. Other corals did not change so much until I started trying prodibio digest. I kept up vodka dosing, and after several weeks, my other corals started turning brighter. I could not tell if it was vodka or prodibio that turned corals brighter. I had to stop the experiment after a few month when I had an issue due to mysterious fish losses. Fish losses stopped as I stopped dosing.

Since then, I tried vodka and prodibio independently for a while, but I have not been able to see any improvements. Vodka and MB7 combination did not produce the desired effect, either. I probably did not try them long enough. My corals are brightly colored, but I would like to push them a bit more to lose some of the tan undertone on a couple of colonies.

That is exactly what i do, I add about 4 drops of MB7 every other day and I also dose Amino Acid (Brightwells) at 1/2 the dosage that they reccomend once or twice a week. Not very scientific but it works for me. My Phosphate has leveled off at 12 PPB on the Hanna Checker and has been the same for months now. No bad algae anywhere in the tank and the sandbed is very clean and algae free. All SPS have vivid color and pretty good growth. I am in the process of changing my lighting to LED's so i hope i do not have any color loss from that, But time will tell.
