medication for bacterial infection (for fish, not me LOL)

I have a naso tang that I think has a bacterial infection. He has popeyes as well as fin rot. Does anyone have a recomendation? This happened while I was on vacation when the temp rose in my tank. I lost several coral as well as another tang. The other fish was bloated as well as showing discoloration on his body. It was almost like he lost his slime coat. I have the naso in QT now.
I was thinking about Mayacin 2. Also, for recomendations where to get the meds. I stopped into the vet on the base and they would not prescribe anything without seeing the animal. They weren't even aware that you could medicate fish. Some Vet the Gov't has working for them.

Mayacin 2 is the best - I had to treat my freshwater for the same thing last week. Drs Fosters and Smiths has it at a descent price - otherwise you pay big time locally. You need it now, I know petsmart does carry the freshwater type, the difference is in the amount - it's the same stuff.

After rereading your post - it sounds like lateral line disease. John in Oldsmar carries I.N.Z (Metronidazole) for treatment. I have some - you will not find this in very many places I don't believe. John has his own line of medication and that is the reason he carries it. Let me know if you need some - just PM me.

I looked up some of the symptoms and the Dropsy (swollen bloated body), popeye, Fin and tail rot, gasping for air - treat with Maracyn-Two.

Mine had lateral line with the above symptoms :(.

Since you had a stressor event and more than one animal was affected, my best guess is the fish is suffering from a gram-negative bacterial infection. An internal fungal pathogen could also be a possibility but it would be odd, although not impossible, that two fish would be so rapidly consumed. How do you tell the difference? You can’t. It is beyond the scope of the average hobbyist. Make your best guess with the history presented.

If it is bacterial, a prolong immersion in Neomycin sulfate would be my first choice since a QT tank is available. Warning, Neomycin will destroy the bacteria in a biological filter very quickly. Make sure you have ample water available for water changes to keep ammonia and nitrite levels down. This drug should be easy to procure.

If it is fungal, a prolong immersion in Fluconazole would a good choice. More than likely if an internal fungal infection is visible, ie swollen abdomen/pop-eye, it is to late for successful treatment. You’re not going to find this medication at any type of retail aquarium shop.

Good luck.

Yeah - sorry for the "Lateral Line" discussion above, I know that is completely incorrect after talking to him.

He told me the fish isn't to bad (Not as bad as the fish that died). At this time of night he doesn't have much choice but to go to petsmart. They only have the common stuff like Maracyn-two, Maracyn-plus and Trisulfa. They might have one or two of the ones you mention - maybe.

John - I love that you now have all these for us, I just keep a few that you have now on hand. With fresh water and my reef tanks up and running- something is always going on. More with water on the floor than diseases - I'd much rather have the water on the floor :D.

Be cautious of expiration dates. Minocycline, like Tetracycline, becomes more potent over time and can even reach levels of toxicity.

how's the fish doing boydx6? If you don't see signs of improvement by tomorrow let me know - I have some of the medication John has mentioned.

Thanks John,

Carol, I think he has improved a little. He is still stressed but his vision seems to have come back a little. He is still vertical! Time will tell. I have my fingers crossed.

hmmm, very interesting reading. when I 1st started up the 120 I had a 55 with a bunch of fish in it and transferred them over to the 120, well 1st I got the from Lakeland and the drive stressed them out than set the tank up put them in the 55 than the next day put them in my 120 and they were soo stressed that the 3 hippos got white dots on them and one had a big bubble over thier eye, and in about 2 weeks everything went away and now there fine and look great, I have no clue how they fixed themselves like that BUT thats the last time ill stress fishies out like that again!!

Stephan hopefully your fish will make a great recovery. Good luck man

That's my biggest concern with my new tank I'll be building - it's not the tank, plumbing and problems with any of that - it's transferring all my buddies. I know they'll be so happy once they get in - it's getting them in without any stress. But with everyone here - I'm sure to get good advice when the time comes.
