As I mentioned in another thread: That larvatus on DD now is so tempting... it's a nice size. I know people are always saying to get the smallest you can with the idea that they will adjust to foods in captivity better. But my experience has been that tiny mouth equals tiny stomach, and requires tiny food particles... it's tough to keep a fish fat on particles Plus, again IME, really small fish have a significantly smaller window of time to start eating well before they reach that "point of no return."
But I'm just not set up to try again ATM...
I'm not so great with still pictures... the T5 lights, my point and shoot camera, and my general suckiness at it are all against me

Peter, I have a Mitratus in QT right now too. That's awesome yours is eating pellets now. Did you happen to treat yours with prazi? I started a treatment last night and mine didn't seem to react too well to it. He got really stressed and was breathing really hard to the point where I had to do a water change and put some carbon back in. Just curious, thanks
Sorry to go off topic Peter, but i experienced the same problem as Brett did, except with a declivis. Since I had to get the prazipro from the States, am wondering if it could have gone off?
Reason I ask is a few days after a full strength dose there's a lot of crap eg bacterial slime in the QT. Assume its from the oligosaccaride they use to keep the praziquantel soluble - so its a bit like carbon dosing without using a skimmer to export the bacterial crap. Meanwhile the pH drops rapidly although it stays within acceptable limits (but I doubt the butterflys are impressed with that either).
Would like to hear what you think.

For what it's worth the fish that I've had react poorly to prazi usually have flukes. Especially if they shake their body and twitch shortly after the medication is applied.
I've seen this with 1 angel and 2 buttefly fish (all on seprate occasions and not at the same time). I did an immediate water change. Waited approximatly four days dosed again. 1 butterfly didn't like the second dose so I removed and ramped up slowly. He died a while later in qt but I don't think it was the prazi dose that killed him. Another thing to consider is that prazi may reduce appetite (some can argue this), so it is best if you can fatten up the fish before medicating (sometimes not possible with infected fish).
Prazi can produce a coat on the top of my qt water but there shouldn't be excess amounts floating in the water column. Make sure the dose mixes with the water properly, and make sure the water is well airated with an airstone or hang on the back filter.

Yes, I have had this happen. The fish will not eat well during treatment, and the breathing will appear labored. I have been unable to correlate this issue to anything put a fish specific event (the fish didn't appear to have flukes or be ill in any way). I did not treat the mitratus with anything. He is still in QT, should I have to.
Sounds strange. Your theory is sound, however, assuming proper dosing, I'm not sure why it occurred for you and never for me? So yeah, maybe a bad bottle?
I have experienced this too. I had a flavirostris come in COVERED in flukes. Other then appearance, the fish was fine... swimming and eating normally. After dosing with prazi, the flukes came off, heaven only knows what was going on inside the fish, and it stopped eating and died in a matter of days.
Glad to hear it is doing well. It's about time for me to transfer mine to the DT!
