Meeting #4

I think the club is done now till probably mid to late fall. This being a winter hobby for most of us, the tank gets put on the back burner during teh warmer months.

I would like to thank everyone who joined us at the meetings or on the threads, and I hope to see everyone next season.

SOme things that I would like to come up with over the summer months:

1. How to get our name out there to invite more people in the hobby to the club.

2 I would like to organize a frag swap for next year.

3. A way to get most of all the meetings set up in the fall for the whole season.

4. A few DIY projects to try at a few of the meetings.

5. A web page to update meeting info on.

If anyone has any suggestions or comments on different stuff they would like to see next season, please let me know. The more input and help I get, the better we can be.

Thanks again to all and have a good summer

None of the new peoples know me at all yet, wasn't able to make it to the last meeting but if I am still in the area (think I should be for a while yet, through the fall at least unless something big happens) I really like to get involved with area clubs. I was a member of the last FW group and a member of INDMAS for a couple years.

There are some ways I think I could contribute in the fall if anybody would be interested in these things.

A photography workshop at one meeting. - I'm not an expert on it but I don't know how in depth people would actually want to go in a meeting anyway. I can go over a lot of tips and tricks to get clear and more crisp pictures of both corals and fish as well as go through different options and settings your camera may or might not have to get the most out of your camera. You would be surprised what kind of pictures you can get with a regular P&S camera. If most in the group have a good idea what they are doing there wouldn't really be a need for this, but I thought I would throw it out there.

Another idea would be a fragging workshop for those that may be new or just never had the courage to chop up their coral. Anybody that would want to participate in it could chip in say $5 and just buy some cheap ugly zoas and a leather or something(s) cheap. Something everybody could have a try at themselves at fraging a piece or two and not have to worry ruining a $100 coral.

Finally, I agree a website to update info on would be good. If nobody else knows how to make one or is any good at it I could give it a shot (been a while since I made one but I have made a few from the bottom up writing in all the code myself even - though it really has been a while) and I could submit it and see if it is what you are looking for - up to par. If anybody has more recent experience in making one please go ahead, I just thought I would offer. I could actually get to work on this soon if you guys/gals would like to get a page up before the fall baring things go well for me financially over the next few weeks.

Let me know what you think, if you like any of those ideas or could add to them.

Wow! Sounds like some good stuff. How do I join?

Just keep an eye on the local page here for updates. You are more welcome to come to any of the meetings and join. It is just starting up again, and I think we had a good turn out for the most part. I hope we can get more with some extra planning ovr the summer. Between word of mouth, flyers at the LFS, and a web page, I hope to have close to a 100 members in the next 3 years. It is a big goal, but it is something.

I would also like to have a frag swap here in town maybe next year. I would like to get the LFS guys involved, and maybe even a speaker of some sort.

Man this is what I am looking for. I know a few of the members of the club know how to do this stuff, but some don't. But I think both are great ideas for meeting topics. You and I need to get together and get some planning done for this fall. I would like to get a web page up by early august to get the name out for a late september meeting.

I'd love to get together and discuss all of this and do some planning. Only slight problem with getting together right now is I am without a car for now and am not in Fort Wayne. I actually live a little north in Kendallville, bout 25 mins from FW. I am working on getting a car (lost my last in a car accident a while ago) it's just the economy hasn't been nice to me. I'm working on turning things around for myself and plan to have a car in the next month so meetings later won't be a problem to get to, just for the moment it would be hard to get down to Fort Wayne in the short term.

I'm also without a saltwater tank (have a cichlid breeding group, breeding is a joy a lot of people miss out on if they only do SW to me) but am pretty sure by the fall I'm planning on setting up another nano to feed my obsession.. er hobby. Haven't had a SW tank since I had to sell my 240g after the car accident so I need my fix soon. I have a 30 breeder I am also itching to set up eventually as a frag tank, probably in tandem with the nano.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to getting involved again with other salt heads. I miss talking tank with people in the hobby. Is it just me or do we pretty much have our own language when talking about our tanks to each other that leave others with a blank stare?

I got involved with INDMAS when they were first getting organized with their website and officials which had to be back in 2004 I think. I think they are a lot more structured than what you want us to be with them having an elected president, treasurer, paid membership and the like. From what I have read on here you want to keep things a lot more I guess laid back would be the right term? - Which I don't see a problem with at all.

100 members in three years I don't think is impossible at all. Fort Wayne isn't exactly tiny, I think the 70th largest city in the US with a population including surrounding communities of half a million. So to me, to find 100 people in the hobby that would like to get together and learn and share with each other and trade frags isn't a far shot at all. The main thing is people have to know we exist. Sometimes we found though in INDMAS a lot of people would just come to the frag swaps and not see them again till the next swap, so I think that is something we may have to expect. I think that is when they decided on paid memberships, with you had to be a paid member to participate in the swaps figuring if they had to pay to join they would hopefully show up at the other meetings and participate more. I don't think we would have to do that though and I wasn't with them long after that to see how it worked out.

A web site to me is almost a must to which we can direct anybody interested in the group to to find out information about us and where the next meeting is and everything. If nobody has the time or know how to make one I can get working on it soon and give it a shot but I don't know if I can promise a state of the art styled site. We can always update the look as more people join and maybe find somebody in the group that builds websites. If I end up doing it I would probably want to visit some people with tanks with nice corals to take pictures for graphics on the site. I would also need a lot of input into what all would like to see on it, maybe work out a mission statement even.

Before the fall and the restart of the meetings several of us should definitely get together and brain storm about how to get the word out about the group.

I could talk more and more on all of this, I wanted to get some of my thoughts out, but I will leave the rest to speak in person in detail with you Fireworm (I don't even know your real name...) hopefully sometime in the near future or through emails for now and with anybody else that would like to do some planning.

I look forward to meeting you all and working with you down the road.

When you come to get frags, we need to talk about the site if you can do it. I have lots of ideas on paper.
