Put em up. I'll be in tomorrow. Remember, one pic per user and try to have the pics up by Sunday evening.

I also shot an old worn-down silo that was kind of neat, but this one is a little more morose. Working in south Chicago and living in NW Indiana, subject matter was not hard to find.

Comments/ critiques are welcome. I've had this camera for less than a month but it's immense fun learning it.

It's a good shot. Next time use a higher f-stop number. This will give you a deeper Depth of Field, (bring items in front and behind more in focus). Backing up also would do it.

Thanks Jesse - I took this same shot the other day actually as you suggested but thought it looked too flat and 2D with everything in focus. This I did with a 100mm macro lens a couple hours ago.

Just haven't gotten good results yet with manually adjusted apertures and exposure times. In time, I suppose.

My dachshund is having a melancholy moment.

Hmm for me it is a hard choice between a nature shot and a person... I'll go with this one - evokes the biggest levels of melancholy in me... MY daughter many years ago. I hope it was not her parents that depressed her that day ;)

Hi guys....the winner of the melancholy pic contest is Mr31415

It was actually a fairly close battle as all the pics could easily fit the theme of 'melancholy'. However, it was Mr31415's pic that seemed to have all the right components I was personally looking for in a winner.

toothybug's shot was also of note, as i'm a big fan of well executed HDR photos, especially with ominous storm clouds present :) ...however, it was the sad little girl with the cute toes who won it out based on the emotive strength of the shot - loved the colour palette, too.

excellent submissions all around, guys and gals! :)

Thanks guys. How about "Unexpected". I'll leave it up for interpretation, but the gist of the image should evoke that same reaction from the viewer on first glance.

Put em up. I'll be in tomorrow. Remember, one pic per user and try to have the pics up by Sunday evening.

How long do these things run? I think it's cool if you make it a weekly assignment that starts on a monday and ends on sunday. This way there's enough time for people to go out, shoot and participate. Just a suggestion :) I'd love to participate.

That's the way it works. On about Sunday evening a subject is picked by the winner of the last pic thread, (Waldo this week picked "unexpected). On Friday I will start a thread for pics for that subject. You have till Sunday to get a pic up. The new winner is chosen by the person that chose the subject. The winner then gets to choose the next subject.

Like I said, "unexpected" is this weeks subject. You have till at least Sunday to come up with something. Feel free to join in. Comments about what is seen is also welcome, but I try to wait till winners are picked.
