I saw your article in Tropical Fish Hobbyist. Nicccccccccccccccccccccccccccce

Could you tell use with month and the title of your article? I went to their website and did not see your name on anything?

Brian

It is in the February 07 issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist ("Volume LV - Number 6 - #611" is on the binding) and it is on page 126 entitled "A Mandarin Diner."

Most LFS and Barnes & Nobles should have it in stock now.

My LFS was just telling me they got the Jan and Feb issues within 2 days of each other. Guess I'll have to go pick up an issue now. ;)

I was looking at the statistics for 2006 for my website and was amazed by the numbers. 1.6 terrabytes of data were transferred to over 340,000 unique visitors last year. 3.1 million pages were viewed. WOW!

A few nights ago, I cleaned the MH bulbs over my tank. My 20,000K XM bulb has a small crack the width of my thumbnail, but it wasn't through and through so I decided to reinstall it. Now one of my SPS is RTNing. :sad1: I'm going to swap out the bulb and trim back the coral. argh.

a little extra UV...strange thing is that you found it, and against your better judgement, put it back in! I do that all the time dammit.

Him signing autographs will make it all go to his head! :fun4: :lmao:

My bet is that there is no copy of the magazine within a 50 mile radius of Melev's home and work:)

Now serious question for Marc - do you think it's better to mount a PFO ballast for a 250W MH bulb on the back of a stand or behind the canopy? I'm almost done with my 20g build and trying to decide where to mount the ballast. The canopy is 80% open in the back. I'm leaning towards behind the stand because I believe humidity from the tank will be more prevalant at the canopy. I wired quick disconnects to the bulb mount from the ballast. Situating remotely is a possibility but I'd need to pick up extra wiring and I cannot hide the wires in the wall as it is a finished basement with pine boards on the walls covering concrete blocks. Your thoughts?

When I looked in the closet for a replacement bulb, I found about 10 MH bulbs to select from. The one I put in in its place was an XM 15,000K bulb. MAN!!! Yellow, anyone? :eek2: How aggravating a color, even with 10,000K ReefLux and 320w of VHO super actinic lighting. I'll probably try out a different bulb tomorrow.

The 20,000K XM crack was a little bit wider, but after it cooled off and I could see the spot, it wasn't in relation to the location where the SPS was RTNing. I guess it was unrelated. Still, the bulb is history.

Eric - too funny. ;)

bklynmet - The thing I try to take into consideration is if the ballast will get wet. When I had the 55g running with dual PFO ballasts, I put it on the side and around the corner from the tank, and use a nice ivy plant to hide it from plain sight. That worked nicely. In your case, find a spot that is safe from water, and also watch those cords to make sure water can't trace its way back into the ballast ever. Keep in mind that the ballast may run hot. If it is sitting on carpet, perhaps it would be wise to put one or two ceramic tiles on the carpet and then the ballast on those.

Have you noticed slower growth with the high K bulbs. I have read that several places, now that I think about it it may have been one of the 3.1 million pages viewed on your site.

Anyway, I am using two 15k and one 10 K 250 watt in my tank and have tried to discern a difference in growth beneath them but honestly I am such a rookie at this I'm not sure anything but the xenia is growing.

That is true. Growth is slower under 20,000K bulbs, and very fast under 6500K. However, what matters to me is how the tank looks rather than how fast corals grow.

Marc,

You still planning on coming down to MARSH this weekend? If so I'd like to stop by and finally meet "the man". I may even ask for that autograph... Seriously, if you are coming I would like a consultation about a sump for a new 90 gallon I am planning. Would it be better to try to catch you at the beginning or the end of the meeting? (I may not be able to stay for the whole time)

Thanks,

I still am getting decent growth under 100% 20K lamps...but they are 1000W so maybe that makes up for it?
