Unless mine is expelling waste, it's always got bubbles. Maybe I just got lucky?

could be lucky could have those intangible parameters in check

I'd love to Kat. I've not been there in 10 years. I know this is off topic, but has your city recovered from all those stupid attacks? I felt badly for everyone there.

Marc,

Everyone is on alert all the time. I don't get on the tube without looking carefully around me and wondering! According to my father-in-law it's not such a tense climate as it was back in the 80's when the IRA was blowing things up.

Kat!

Very near St John's Wood. Glad your Mum is a neighbor ;)

Kat!

i did a semester near you at regents college, but i was living on chelsea beach. Cheers :)

sorry for the OT Melev

Melev, any news on silencing your overflow and getting the surface skimming better? I have mine running, and your right, the surface skimming really isn't the best! I may have to change it our for something better if you have something figured out!

Running the water faster, it is silent but the surface doesn't get skimmed. I think the best solution would be two drains instead of one, but since my tank's surface is very narrow I don't want to add it as it will obstruct the light's path into the reef.

Marc,
Ball bearings can be gotten from McMaster.com
Plain steel - catalog page: 3532
Stainless steel - calalog page: 3566

You're wasting your time looking at shotgun pellets.

Oh, and by the way......REEFCAST!

If you guys (and girl) weren't so intertaining.......we wouldn't hassle you about the 4 MONTH break!

Lee

Thanks for the lead, Lee. I'll check them out and hopefully score a few of the correct size at last.

I went to Austin this weekend, and brought back some zoanthids and gorgonians for the tank. I'll post some pictures once they settle in.

This looks awesome, getting lots of ideas here....

In reguards to not getting surface skimming with the flow turned up, how is the "skimmer" piece attached to the bulkhead? If it is not glued, I would try replacing it with a pipe with a larger slot to see if that gets your surface skimming with the higher flow.

I would use a new pipe if possible so that you could switch back easy enough. another thought on the same lines would be to use a slightly longer pipe in that place (not sure if it is possible with the tank shape). Also if you cannot easily remove you could take a dremel to the slot to make it bigger.

p.s. I could be compeletely off base but thought I would toss this out as an idea.

Marc,
You think if I decreased the flow to a much smaller pump I would have a better chance of it skimming the surface? I'm running a mag7 right now, but could easily get a mag 3 or smaller, but I am going to be running a CL in the near future, so the turnover will be good inside the tank. I'll try that and let you know about the surface skimming and noise.

Normally all you need is enough pump to get the water back up to the tank. In my case, I was really hoping to create enough flow to avoid anything else that would clutter up the tank.

I added a Y connection to the locline to create two points of flow, but I don't think that is going to be enough since I have to cut back (ballvalve) the amount of water going into the tank for the surface to stay clean.

Here are a few pictures from the today. First of all, SNOW! :D

Those are harmless hydroids.

Two new gorgonians I brought back from Austin.

Some zoanthids that have a blue hue to them, thanks to Aaron.

I found this hermit in my reef, so I moved it over to the nano.

I think the colors in this tank would be nicer if I had a 12,000K DE bulb in there. Maybe I'll get one at MACNA.

Day 53

Day 53

I haven't posted too many pictures of the tank because the crud on the sand just ruins the look for me. More flow would probably fix it, but as you've read by now, I just don't want to stick a powerhead in there. I want invisible flow. ;)

So here are two full tank shots. Then I'll add more details about the latest stuff.

I'm amazed that I can't get nice crisp focused pictures through the angled section of acrylic. Holding the lens of the camera against the panel usually gives me the best results, but I got several blurry shots. Here are a couple of decent pictures, but they are smaller for a reason.

The goby posed. I have 3 more in my quarantine tank that I think I'll add to this tank so they can hang out in groups.

This ricordia seem happy and colorful, even though it is only a 10,000K bulb (best guess).

The orange zoanthids (same as the ones pictured above) are the ones I got in Houston last weekend. They are opening up. I'd have to say these are micro zoanthids because the polyps are tiny.

These look amazing under more blue lighting.

The Rose BTA has moved up slightly since I moved the rockwork.

The zoanthids I got from bmwaaron are very content, opened up and spread out.

The mini carpets I put in my tank have split and now there are four on this rock.

I picked up three of the large Nassarius snails. These would be considered jumbo in size compared to the normal ones in the trade.

Ugly sand...

Work that sand, baby!

Are those gobys the sand sifting kind? If so I am surprised the sand looks that dirty. Is it just diatoms or detritus.....maybe 3 days without lights would clear it up some. Just a thought. Are you against the thought of drilling the back for some flow, like two outputs connected to a SCWD like you had in your 29?
