Melting Due To Heat

Will my shrooms recover from their shrinking due to the heat of the tank water? What can I do besides dropping frozen water jugs in the sump? I've been going a whole week through a damn heat wave that has cost me some critters and will soon claim my clam!

what lighting do you have on there...is it an open top..is the tank by a window..not so sure i would do the ice jug method unless the water temp doesnt change quickly..put a fan across the tank to blow heat away...last resort is getting a chiller for the tank..

Rick

I am running 150 mh x 2, open top and the tank is by the window, but gets no light because of the curtains and black painted back. The temperature is way past 86 degrees more like 90 and the frozen jug doesn't remain solid very long; I would say under an hour. I'am considering a chiller investment for the next heat wave; I can't afford $589 right now. This sucks! This is my second hot summer with this display with losses. Very Dumb by my part for not learning the first time!

How many degrees can I bring the temp down, with a fan blowing across the top?

If its by a window get a $90.00 window A/C unit to blow into the canopy or across the top of the water. thats what Ive had to do.

Good idea, but I can't afford to run another AC unit, I'am already running three units, and the position of the AC wouldn't work.

Thanks for your reply!

with my tank and a fan across it ive brought my temp down as much as 10 degrees..

Rick
I will buy a box fan for $10.99 today and blow it across the tank.
A 10 degree difference is very significant!:D

monitor your temps for awhile and make sure the temp doesnt drop to fast..i would start with the lowest fan speed and go from there..try getting the fan as close to the top of the tank as possible..2 things will happen..1) evaporation..2) the fan will help cool you MH lighting..hope this helps.

I'am already evaporating at least a gallon a day.:(

yes but the evaporation is doing you no good at the moment..think about it this way..when your hot and you get a nice breeze blowing across you..it cools you down..same principle with the fan..if your going to get evaporation..might as well put it to good use..:)

Points well taken, can't wait to get home! Damn heat kills the hobby when your losing prized display inhabitants.:(

i hear you on that one..good luck..post back here and let me know how it works out for you..

Rick
Will do! I will monitor the temp with ph/temp electronic probe.:)

how are thing going for you..

Rick
I bought the two $10.99 box fans as planned, pointed one towards the top of display and the other facing the livingroom. Within about 2hrs the room and tank water was cooler. Sad to say but I lost the clam I bought at a frag swap last october 2007. It was growing fast; over an inch of new shell growth.

There was lots of evaporation; over the usual gallon. It had to be the influence of the fan air circulation.
:(

fans are only temp. until you get over your heat wave you have going there..sorry about the loss of your clam.

Rick

I feel your pain. Last summer I had PC lights so temp was never an issue. This summer I switched to MH and surprised my temp jumped up to 86 degrees. I know, stupid me. Lost some LPS before I got one of the tornado fans. Mounted it so it blew across my water surface in my sump. Temp has now been stable between 79-80 degrees.

helps with the heat

helps with the heat

I keep my house ac at 79 and I have 2 250 watt MH and 2 54 watt T5 and I have my heater set to come on at 76. I see the heater on quite a bit with the set up I have. I evap about 1.5 to 2 gallons a day. Temps out side have been in the upper 90's all week sofar.

I guess I dont understand how so many people have problems with heat. Especially if you have AC. I live in a old drafty house with 2 window units on low all the time and my tank never gets even warm. I have a 75g with 2 metal hallide in a canopy that run for 14 hours a day with no fans or vents. The only trhing I can guess is that you are leaving your air on but the thermostat is too low. Turn the air up the I would rather pay alittle higher elec. bill than have things die in my tank. I live in IOwa where it has been around 90-95 with 100% humidity very hot but never once has my tank temp ever gone up.
