Meredith's 90 gallon

So, hi! My tank has been set up for 5 months now and I wanted to share it with you guys. I will start with Full tank shots of the changes it went through over the last few months to get to where it is today. You should know that originally I wanted to go with a "preditor reef" with a lionfish and a zebra eel. That idea fell through when I had a problem with my nano and had to combine the two together. The pvc pipes are like 3 1/2 inches or something and were intended to protect my eel from knocking over rocks or scratching hiself on the rocks. Well, even though I had to postpone my eel and lion I still want them, so later on when i'm able to get another tank then i will still use this one for that purpose.

More to come....

So, my tank is a 90 gallon tank with a simple HOB overflow that empties into a rubermaid container (i dont know how many gallons it holds). It actually empties into my refuge that I made out of a bucket that I cut the top off of and cut slits all around the side to allow the water to flow into the rest of the sump without losing my cheato. I dont currently have a real skimmer right now. The one I have is just one of those berlin bubble stone skimmers. (I know I know.. it's way outdated and way too small for my tank, but something is better than nothing and it does actually pull out poo and stuff)

So, I dont have a clue what brand my return pump is. I had a member from my club set up my filtering system for me. He just put everything together in a box and told me how to do it then rung it all up. I didn't have a clue at the time so I didn't know to ask what kind it was or its GPH or anything like that.

The pictures above and the first three pictures are the progression shots of my tank until the first of this month. The 4th pic here is my antenna lion that I had to trade in so he wouldn't eat my other little fishes from my nano. and the 5th pic is of my RODI unit that I got for 80 bucks off of a friend. If I remember correctly its the 60 GPD unit and 4 stages.

More to come still...

So, these are a few pictures of my favorite corals. I guess mentioning the corals means it's time to talk about lights. Well, I dont have a big impressive light system because I live paycheck to paycheck and can only afford small bits of equipment at a time. But the lights that I've aquired are working very well for me. I even have significant growth in sps corals and one acro!

so I have one T5 fixture that has one actinic bulb and one 10,000k bulb. then I have a coralife Power compact fixture 48 inches. Most people told me that I wouldn't be able to grow alot of corals under these lights because it wasn't enough. but my sps are growing and my LPS and softies are REALY growing and that's enough for me. I'm thinking about getting rid of the PC's and replacing them with two small metal halide fixtures but that will be way later and only if I can find two small USED pendants that I can build a canopy around.

So, in the pictures we have my mushroom rock where my green ric is fighting with my purple mushroom. then we have my candy canes that started at one head just a few months ago and is now at 4! 3rd we have my show piece, the bubble coral... this one started out as a small 3 inch coral and is now over 7 inches across! the 4th pic is of my green monti, you can also see the acro and a purple monti all that I got for free from my clubs VP... the green monti I've had for a few months and has grown almost an inch all around. The last picture is of my torch coral and hammer coral both have shown wonderful growth but nothing like the bubble coral.

Thanks all for looking. i love to take pictures of my reef so I will be posting tons of them here! I love to hear helpful advise and critisms so feel free to tell me if you see something I should correct or should think about doing. Also if you have any questions please dont hesitate to ask.

ok well, lets add another story from my fishy adventures! It's kinda lame but I'm excited about it. I got a candycane from a friend just to see how it would do in my tank. It was in the process of splitting into two heads when I got it in July. During the time that I've had it, it has fallen into the sand at least 10 times, been eaten on by a stupid peppermint shrimp and been stung by my HUGE bubble coral. The sting happened just today when my new emerald crab decided that he didn't like the positioning of the poor coral and "tossed" it from it's perch into the bubble coral below. I finnaly gave up on trying to keep it in the rockwork for now and put it on my frag rack (far away from the destructive little bugger). It's feeder tenticals were out just before lights out so I fed all four heads just to give it the energy it may need to heal (again). The point of my story here is just to show how hardy this coral has been and how amazing it is to me that something that is perceived to be so delicate can go through so much disaster and still live and grow! I've only had this coral for 5 months and I'm about to have 5 heads! It just finnished splitting into 4 and there is already a 5th mouth visable in there!! woo hoo!

I want to tell another story... this one is pretty sad. I learned the hard way about several things this past month. The first is that tangs are delicate and very vulnerable to ich. I introduced a chalk basslet to my tank and it brought with it a bit of ich. The mimic tang caught it and died two days later. :sad1: This taught me to quarenteen everything! I set up a QT emediately after that happened. The chalk bass survived and is doing fine by the way.

The second lesson I learned this month is that 5 or 6 months of maturing is not enough for a mandarin to survive in a tank this size. I added all the mature live rock and pods and everything from my nano that had been set up for quite a while then waited another 5 months before adding a mandarin to this tank. I even bought the pods in a bottle and added those to the tank as a safety precaution to keep the population up. But allass.... the poor thing starved to death anyway. It was very sad to watch. I didn't have a clue what was happening until it was too late... he just faded and stopped hunting then was gone. I will be waiting another year before trying again wtih this fish.

The third lesson isn't really a lesson but more of an accusation. The first fish I bought was a very tiny clownfish that was "declared a fish" on feb 27. I bought him about a month after that. Bubbles (his name) was soooo tiny and he was such a pig! I moved him over to the 90 along wtih all the other stuff and animals from the nano. I never had a problem with him.. he was the healthiest fish I had. He actually slept under a powerhead at the top of the tank every night. Well, the day after I lost my mandarin and 5 days after losing my tang he just went missing. there was no body, no evidence at all. He wasn't sick or acting wierd or anything. I'm accusing the peppermint shrimp of killing and eating him. I saw the two shrimp hanging out in poor bubble's sleeping spot the night I discovered him missing so I'm blaming them. i guess the lesson here is to buy bigger fish.

Rest In Piece my lovely fishy friends.

So,i think you're tank is coming along nicely ! Thanks for sharing the progress pics along with the corals. It looks like you're off to a good start and the corals you have so far are all pretty hardy and pretty easy to take care of.

So,it totally sucks about your fishy friends :( . It's never a good thing but at least you learned a few lessons and are now taking the proper steps. I think QT'ing fishes are must before going into your DT. It only takes one to wipe out all your fish and that is a tragedy that can be avoided by QT'ing. As far as your little baby clownfish,I don't think the peppermint shrimps killed and ate him. It was still a juvenile and probably got ich easily from the tang and eventually died 5 days later. His body was most likely eaten by tank scavengers along with the peppermint shrimps right away so that's why you didn't see a body. It still sucks losing a fish though :( Sorry for your losses.

So,I also wanted to tell you that there are some nice HOB skimmers that are inexpensive and get the job done efficiently if you wanna go that route. I've heard good things about the AquaC Remora Pro HOB skimmers and are reasonably priced OR there are a lot of in-sump skimmers that are less than $200 that you could find easily. But right now I think you can totally get away with not having a skimmer and just maybe using some poly filter pads tucked in your overflow box or maybe use a filter sock where your water flows to your sump. Just an idea :)

So,you're probably wondering why I started everything off with "So" :lmao: hahahahaha!!! I'm sorry I was just having a little fun with you cuz I was reading through your posts and noticed that you sure do use "so" a lot at the beginning of your sentences lol!! So ,I couldn't resist LOL !! It's all in good fun! I was just messin around  Good luck with your tank!

Thanks for reading my thread and for the advise. Do you really think the clown got ich? He was just a tiny baby but he wasn't sick and I didn't see anything on his body. I made sure to watch him very closely. About the skimmer..... i'm hoping to get a Octopus skimmer for christmas so I'm not worried about that. Until then I have one of those bubble stone skimmers tucked into the sump. Its way too small but it does pull out some gunk. (something is better than nothing right?) I dont wanna add any more fish until I replace my DI resin and get the skimmer. Losing all my favorite fish was a real downer but like you said I did learn something from them.
Your right...I do you "So" alot! I think it's a combination of my Texas roots and my blonde roots. lol! I dont mind a little fun poking!

I'm getting my 90g tonight, I can't wait for the upgrade, my 28g is getting pretty cramped. I'll be running a similar setup with a HOB overflow and a wet/dry filter I plan on replacing with a sump/fuge soon.

If I would have known better at the time I would have nixed the HOB overflow and just drilled the tank. I have had problems with snails getting in there and clogging up the tubes or bubbles getting into a tube and reducing the amount of flow. If you do the HOB overflow i would recomend putting in an extra U tube for redundancy. If I hadn't done that then i would have flooded my appartment several times. If one gets clogged then the other is sufficient enough to keep the tank from over flowing, although the water level does rise noticably. Good luck with your upgrade!

Have you checked your sump for the clown? I used to have a wrasse that would jump in the overflow and hand around in the sump's refugium for days.

your tank looks really nice, sorry about the fish . keeping fish alive is the hardest part for me too. i introduced ich with my first fish lost three clowns and a tang the blue one like dory. live and lern. now i have a tomato clown and a lawnmower blenny that have been inthere about 1 year and a bunch of corals. keep up god work .

Well, it's time to give a little update with the ongoings of my tank. The first picture is of a mated pair of clowns that I got at an early "black friday" sale at one of my LFS. I put them directly into the display because I didn't think I would be buying any fish and didn't have my QT remotely ready for fish. The male didn't last one night. The female was beaten to a pulp by the damsels (who I also think killed the tiny male) and she died a few days later. Now the plan here is to erradicate my tank of all 4 damsels after christmas.

The second picture is of the new pair of mated clowns that I got at an after "black friday" sale at a different LFS. This pair is MUCH bigger and more mature. They are at least 2 inches and very pretty. Also, this time I had the QT ready for them and they will stay there until the damsels are all gone. you may notice a bubble skimmer in the QT because it works and it's way too small to be useful anywhere else!

The day I got the first pair I lost, I went to a frag swap and got a nice branch of Hammer coral and an orange ricordia. I now have two hammer corals and I want to put them together (touching) but I'm not sure if that would spell disaster or not. What do you guys and gals think? Can you put two hammers of different colors together without any bad effects to them?

Oh yeah...... wish me luck with this new pair of clowns! I have had them for two days now and they are eating like pigs! Enjoy the pictures!

A New Look and Ridding Myself of Evil Fish!

A New Look and Ridding Myself of Evil Fish!

It's been a while now so I thought I would update my thread. Today I spent several hours working on my tank. I had to get the evil quartet of damsels out so I could actually keep a clownfish or two in the tank. The damsels have killed all THREE of my previous attempts at keeping clowns. So, I found somebody who wanted to buy them.
To get them out I had to take all the rocks out. While I was taking them out I thought, "Why not re-arrange the rocks the way I wanted them in the first place?" I went and picked up 15 gallons of water (my RODI needs it's filters replaced- too lazy) and started mixing up some fresh saltwater to do a water change at the end of all this trouble. I took all the rocks out of the tank and the corals and put them sepparate into too grey tubs from walmart (i use these to move so I have tons!). PLEASE, if your doing something like this learn from my mistake and wear GLOVES! My hands are all kinds of torn up and I have a bristle worm spine stuck in my thumb (that sucker HURTS!:blown:)
It was alot more difficult to get the damsels out than I thought concidering there was only two rocks left in the tank when I went to net them. I managed and put them in the tub with the corals.
This time around I made sure to stack the big rocks on the bottom of the stacks and give them the "shake test" before placing the next rock. Ideally I would have preffered to epoxy the rocks together but I wasn't as prepared for this as I would have liked. For now this will work. I managed to get my two "mountains" on each side of the tank with, what I'm calling, a mushroom bridge in the middle. I was able to place ALL of my corals on the rocks (couldn't secure them, no glue-will get more later) and get rid of the frag rack for now. I'm really happy with the aquascape this time around and expect to keep it that way. this way I have plenty of room for the corals to grow out and plenty of swimming room for any future fish I may get. (i only have two in there at this point)
My biggest mistake was that I put my SW mixing powerhead in the tub with the damsels and one of them decided that he/she wanted to hide in or near it and got sucked in to meet a very violent end. This powerhead is so powerful that I can't keep it in my 90 gallon tank without getting a sand storm and tearing my corals to pieces. The fish was ripped in half and rolled into a very tight ball. Poor thing never stood a chance! Yet again.... another lesson learned!
I scraped off all the xenia to sell to the buyer of the damsels also but as you all probably know, you can't really get rid of xenias. The residue or little bit of tissue that is left on the rocks will probably grow back bigger than before.

Well, since the buyer didn't show up today the damsels had to go into the QT to await purchase tomorow evening. Since they had to be in the QT I had to get my pair of clowns out and introduce them to the DT earlier than I planned. It's only a few days early but still! Well, after an hour acclimation, they are enjoying the newly found elbow room. These are much much bigger than the previous pair and the single male before. Those were barely an inch in total length where the female in this pair is two inches and the male is just barely shorter than her. Beautiful ocellarous(sp?) clowns, and PIGS (they ate fore me right after I introduced them to the tank)! I feed them 3 times a day and keep the tank at 82 degrees to intice them to spawn for me. I'll do another post with details on that when the time comes. Anyways! I know nobody reads these threads just to learn! Lets get on with the pictures already!

1st is the new FTS! It looks great to me! If you remember the last FTS I had this "great wall of china" thing happening!
2nd is the right "mountain" close-up
3rd is the left "mountain" close-up
4th is the two hammer corals that I aquired and think look really great together. I wasn't sure if I could do this (have them touch) but it doesn't seem to adversely effect them so
5th since I had room for one more picture I decided to show you guys the snow we got here in Dallas a few days ago! Woo hoo! actual flakes of snow! Usually we just get sleet or ice!

i got a firefish the otherday. I didn't put him through QT mostly because I wasn't able to clean it and do a water change on the big tank. It was also suprisingly healthy at the store and eating. He ate after just a few minutes in the tank. He has taken up residence under my hammer corals. I'll post up pictures if I can later.

I completely forgot about this thread! We had our spring frag swap yesterday. This time I actually won something in the raffle! We always have a live fish raffle and I won 4 of the 12 fish! I went home with a Flame angel, Powder Blue Tang, Flasher Wrasse, and Yellow Corris Wrasse! I also bought some corals. I dont think that any of them are small enough to count as a frag. More to follow with pics of the corals.
At this point I'm rather worried about my flame angel. She was looking fine yesterday, but today she is still hiding and when she did come out she looked to be so stressed out that she couldn't really hold herself horizontal or still. I'm hoping that she will chill out soon. I dont want to loose her even if I didn't pay anything for her. I know I should have quarenteened these fish but I didn't expect to win any fish so I didn't set up a QT.
