Mertensii confirmation

A dealer got this anemone in and is saying it is a Mertensii. This is the only image they were able to provide. Is it really a Mertensii or gigantea?

I'll have to say Gigantea without a photo of the foot, you will not get a positive ID without that photo. It's really nice though :)

I think you can see the verrucae in the middle on the right side where the fold is in. They appear blue/purple, which I understand to mean that this is definitely a gigantea, with Mertensii's being red/magenta. Can anyone else see them as well, or is this something else?

if they are asking for a big price tag they are obligated to send along more pics. if they refuse then (if i were you) i will pass. just tell them you are a serious buyer and just want to confirm the ID as you dont want to end up with identical specie, any ligit and good dealer would send you more pic especially nowaday a pic is very easy to obtain, just snap and send through text.

They are asking $100, which is less than what purple gigantea's go for that are around 8 inches in Canada. They are going to see if they have time to send me additional pictures today.

As Winwood said seeing the color of the Verracue does little to ID Mertensii vs. Gigantea. The main difference in ID's is that Mertensii's Verracue go all the way to the foot whereas Gigantea's Verracue stops after a few inches.

ok at that price for the heck of it just snatch it and deal with ID later :)

I agree with this unless you're only trying to stock one carpet and that carpet being a S. Mertensii.

Another good way to tell the difference is tentacle length. Merts have longer tentacles around the mouth compared with their outer tentacles, while gig tentacles are more uniform.

That is not alway true in captive situations. The length of tentacles of a merten's is often very uniform especially in recently transferred animals.

As for the color of the verrucae, I suppose it depends on your definition of purple vs. magenta. IME, the magenta of the merten's is different than the purple of the gigs, but I haven't seen all the animals there are to see.

It is also true that while the verrucae in the merten's usually goes to the foot and turns to reddish-orange stripes (whether the verrucae are magenta or orange) it isn't a 100% way to ID them either. I had one that didn't have very colorful verrucae at all and they didn't go to the foot.

With all that being said, like everyone else, my initial ID would be that it is a gig.
