Mesh top for tank question

I am curious for those who have screens installed.
If you have a canopy, are you attaching the screen to the inside of the canopy, along the back of the canopy etc..?

For those with any open top, do you create a place to put food through the screen, or do you just lift it up every time?

What materials do you guys use to make these?

1/4" clear UV protected mesh and a screen window frame kit.

I have some mesh left over from a bulk purchase if you want to PM me. You can also get it at:

Reef Monsters
The Aquarius
Reef Culture

Screen window frame kits are at Lowes and Home Depot.

Get the framing tool for installing the spline.

Use a fine toothed hacksaw to cut the frame to size.

When I was at The Aquarius last week Carlos was putting a frame together.

I'd lift the screen up to feed rather than create a hole to feed through unless you cover the hole each time when you're done. The fish will find that hole!

I purchased the screen from BRS and the frame kit from Home Depot. The kit comes with some tabs that make removing the screen very easy. I have three screens, one for each section of the top and I remove the center one for feeding and just lay it on top of one of the others. Since fish can get through the wildest of cracks and openings I do recommend lifting instead of cutting a feeding hole.

I used the BRS kit and screen. It's about a year old now and getting brittle. If you touch the screen, you have a hole in it.

Absolutely!

In addition, I ensure the frame fits snuggly into the lip of the tank/trim. This keeps the jumpers from knocking it loose. The use the pull tabs, as Chad mentioned, on the front corners so it's easy to pull out of it's snug fit.

Pellets will drop right through, but it's lifted up for frozen foods.

I bet that's related to heat. We know a lot about heat here in Arizona and it tends to turn things brittle.

Flake food will go thru the mesh, when I feed frozen I lift up the mess.

I highly suggest using the .25" mesh and NOT the .5"! I had a Tilefish make it through the .5" to his death and redid the screen with Weyrman .25" and no problems since.
On my 185 acrylic with the "Euro top, I use the Command brand picture hanging Velcro on 6 placings to hold it firmly down. This lasts a long time and I just peal them off when I need to replace, no damage or residue.

I also lift to feed - if there is a hole big enough for a fish to fit through, he WILL find it!

On my 55 ADA RR glass reef, I just have the screens sitting inside the top frame. Salt creep helps to keep them "glued" in place, but I also have a wood canopy on that tank.

There are some good YouTube videos on how to make your own screen, that's how I learned. Like Roy said, the roller tool is a MUST!!

Good luck!
