I got my wife's DSLR Canon out and took some pics of my new hammer frags.

Nice little hammer! 2nd pic looks a bit underexposed.

Last time I pointed my Canon 6D at one of my hammers:

Depends how you are shooting / what mode.

The best answer is to suggest you familiarize yourself with the holy trinity of exposure - aperture, shutterspeed and ISO.

I generally shoot all manual, so I either increase aperture, lengthen shutterspeed or (rarely) increase ISO.

Using the exposure compensation adjustment is another way but that's not always available depending the mode one is using.
