okay, so I just got a deal on a mh unit. It's 2x250w which would be way too much (I think) for my 55 gallon. I'm going to put 150w ballasts on instead. The unit also includes 4 t5s as well. Any suggestions on bulbs to use to bring out the best color and growth?

Lighting is so subjective to each person.
If you like the white look then it's 10K bulbs with actinic t5.
If you like the blue look 20 k for the bulbs.
Actinic might not be needed here so I would do 2 white with them.
If you like it in between then 12 or 14 k with actinic.
You will have to check the 150 bulbs for the Kelvin rating available.
It's going to be trail & error here I think, until you find what you like.
If you can look @ a few tanks that would help you decide.

Thanks, I realized that the other day. I went with 250w 14k phoenix bulbs with actinics.

I was going to say 20k bulbs. They tend to not be as bright as 10k and give very nice color.
Regardless, be careful with heat from these bulbs.
