Metal in Solenoids

Does it matter if the plunger inside a solenoid, that comes into contact with salt water, is made of stainless steel or PVC/plastic/teflon? Can a solenoid with a stainless plunger be used safely? I am guessing that since the impellers of many pumps are stainless that this should not matter but any help and guidance on the right solenoids (1/2" or 3/4") would be much appreciated.

Problem is that not all stainless is created equal and just because it's stainless, doesn't mean it wont corrode and ultimately seize up. It all depends on the quality of the stainless and the alloys in it.

I use only quality 110v solenoids from STC Valve. STC makes high quality ones that last for years and have all plastic internals. I've got nearly 5 years going on my STC solenoids. The ones I use are the 2P025 1/4-3

Thank you very much for the kind words! If you decide to use one of those 110v solenoids from STC valves, you will need to add the AC power plug or splice in an extension cord which is what I did as the leads coming off the valve are short. You can get a screw on type power plug from any hardware store or Home Depot or just cut the female end off an extension cord and slice it to the valve. It's simple and a much better solution than the typical 12v solenoid that would require an AC adapter.

Hope you have great holiday too!
Best Wishes!
