Correct. Controller and anything related to its internet connection need to be on backup (modem, router, bridge if using) to notify if power down. Can get pretty cheap APC units that'll give a few min of power which is all that you need for notification.
you could use one of the digital switch inputs with a relay and 12V power supply. When the power supply has power it will have the relay activated... when it loses power the other pole will connect alerting the AC3. The AC3 would need to be the only thing on the battery backup unless you added a power out state to the programming to leave on the only outlets you need on during an outage. You'd need a larger UPS for the second option
