MH and UV

I know it has been said already but I cannot find the reference here.

Am I right in saying a SE MH has UV protection built in to the glass tube, whereas DE MH does NOT have this UV protection and needs a cover plate to limit the UV exposure?

I am asking since my cover plate on one Sfigoli Infinity 400W SE MH shattered to bits this morning, and I want to know whether I can turn the lights on with this one cover plate missing. I do have 3mm glass covering the water surface of the tank so there is no way water can splash on the bulb - it is just about UV.

I run single ended with no glass but if your corals are used to the extra uv protection, any increase in uv might cause some lightening of the tissue. Some bulbs give off more than others i believe. But you are right in that a SE bulb is already uv shielded by the outer layer of the bulb.
