MH lighting period?

After discussing this with a fellow reefer, how long do you leave your halides on each day? Right now I'm running about 8 hours and I wonder if it's too long.

I don't think any natural reef gets only 6 hours of sunlight so I run mine at least 8 hrs.

250w 14k EVC's for 13hrs... Its a little long to have MH's on for my taste so I'm looking to get some kind of supplementary/backup lighting to use before and after the MH's... maybe cutting them down to 8-10hrs.

7 hours per day w/ 4 - 14k phoenix in the summer. 8.5 hours per day otherwise.
